Planned for a trip down PINS but with the beach closed from high tides, we had to change plans.
Fished Port A South Jetty at sunset on Oct 5. Just a large ladyfish caught near the point on a RattLtrap.
On Oct 6, we paddled over to the Port A North Jetty and pulled the kayaks up to the beach. We walked the length of the jetty throwing shiny artificials with no luck. Then we settled in on the gulf side about halfway out and started bottom fishing with live finger mullet. There was just acres of mullet in the water. Caught a big gafftop, then a nice bullred, a few more hardheads, and a mangrove snapper. After a bit of a lull, we caught a 3 ft blacktip or so. After that, it was nonstop shark action. We could barely keep lines in the water. We either had a shark on and were landing him, or they would run into the rocks and break us off. Double hookups at times. We stopped once we ran out of bottom tackle and walked back to fish the pocket at the first break. From there, we pulled out a few ladyfish and a number of trout, one of which we kept.
Paddled back over to the north jetty on Oct 7. Not as much bait today. Walked the jetty again fishing with shiny things. To my surprise, my first catch was a 18-19" Snook! My first Snook! Walked down the length of the jetty and had a few bites on a 2 oz gold spoon, then finally a hookup with a 4' blacktip on the gold spoon. Tried to catch some mullet with the castnet, but they were holding a little further out than I could reach. Walked back and fished the pocket again and pulled out a number of trout and ladyfish.
Drove down to the PINS HQ on Oct 8 and were there when they opened the beach. We made it down to MM 35 before turning back. IT was tight driving alot the way with the waves up to the dunes. Starting about MM 30, there was also alot of debris that slowed progress. I got sideswiped by a wave I didnt' see and must have gotten a bit of water in the distributor and was skipping a cylinder for a few minutes. That raised our anxiety about the high water and we turned around drove back and got off the beach around 1.
For those still wondering about South Jetty access, you can wade through the little cut where everyone parks and it is just a few feet deep, or, you can walk up to the MSI and walk along their educational path and get to the jetty without getting your feet wet. We did both. I'm not sure if MSI frowns upon that, but no one said anything to us.
Port A and alot of the coast really took a big hit from the storm and we were happy to go down and give them some business. Anyone on the fence about a trip should just go and be a little flexible on their plans and expectations. Plus, the fishing pressure seems to have been really diminished after the storm.
Cheers. |

Glad you had a nice trip even though your plans had to change a bit. Did you happen to speak with anyone about if/when the Jetty boat might be going back in service? I've been curious about that myself. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |
