On the sand at whitecap @ 0915, drove to beach marker 246 and was fishing by 0945. Saw good looking water with two rows of small breakers, lots of non-stressed mullet in the wade gut and a S-to-N current with very little old weed. Caught two 14-15 whiting and a hardhead on Fishbites around 10:30 -11:00 then the weed fouling picked up. Not enough to bitch about but it did increase. Wind was low and the surf dropping when I left @ 12:30. A good day to be on the beach despite no real good luck fishing.
Looking forward to putting the kayak in at Packery Park to explore the area soon.

Thanks Bruce! I saw Brenda Meyer got a nice trout 24.5 on finger mullet the other night south of Bob Hall. Finger mullet should be running with the water dumping out of the bays and the redfish should be hot right now.

In my haste to get to the beach today, I left my small two gallon beach bucket which has my cast net in it. I swear I heard the schools of finger mullet snickering as they flooded safely by me in the wade gut - bastids! I resolved the net bucket issue when I got home AFTER unloading my mother's window boards taken down just a few days ago. I am again properly rigged for future surf fishing trips.
I know its been said before but CC dodged a BIG bullet with Harvey. My heart and thoughts are with the residents of the towns and cities hurt by Harvey. We have relatives and friends in some of these areas and thanks to the Almighty, they are alive.

Good thing I found this thread. Could someone recommend a couple of locations close to BHP where I can try to get some finger mullet? I'm going to try the boat ramp at Packery, but would like to know of a couple of other good places in case I get skunked at the boat ramp. Thanks for the help!

Fished the surf, SBH, on Wed. Hit the sand around 7:30 A. When I found the bait running I stopped. Water a bit sandy but weed was mild. Used cut and live mullet. All action was on the live finger mullet. 1st fish was a hardhead. 2nd fish a 18" Red. Next a 22" Red. The the rod bent over almost to the sand. Got hold of the rod just before it shot out of the tube. 30 minutes later a huge jack. Then a skipjack, another huge jack, and finished the morning with another undersized red. All and all a good day.
Stan I hope your brother is doing well. Zip hopet you got all your chores finished.

I know you are a seasoned hand--but I have seen more than one rod go by-by!!
I always leave a (loose drag)--
Use to love to watch the tourist fishing Matagorda pier/jetty--when a school of jacks would come thru--lotta rods overboard.

Fishing is an on going process of getting "seasoned". Big fish are very adept at "seasoning" an angler. Very humbled when I learn a hard lesson, but I prefer to learn, and apply learned lessons. Got to love the process.
