Hurricane Harvey Damages the Bird Island Basin Boat Ramp Resulting in Limited Launching Ability.
(Corpus Christi,TX) - Padre Island National Seashore experienced some recent damage as a result of Hurricane Harvey. Strong westerly winds blowing across the Laguna Madre created large waves that pounded the bay side shoreline of the park and undercut a portion of the Bird Island Basin Boat Ramp. The undercutting caused the loss of a portion of the ramp on the deep end to break off.
As a result of the wave action the ramp is not only shorter but now has a severe drop off at the end of the ramp. A buoy marker is in place along with signage on shore explaining the current limits of the ramp until repairs occur. While it is open for use at your own risk, the park is recommending those with other launching options use them until the temporary repairs can be completed. This is especially true for vessels of greater length.
The National Park Service has an experienced team deployed to the park assessing the damage. They are working on solutions for a temporary repair to keep the ramp operational until permanent repairs can be made once funds become available.
In addition please note that storm waves also washed away a portion of several of the campsites in the Bird Island Basin Campground. The area is still open for day use activities such as fishing and wind surfing, however the camp ground itself is closed until repairs are made. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |
