Planning on heading to this pass this weekend, has anyone been down there that can comment on the driving conditions? Is it even passable?

i havent been back there recently, but the last time i was back there it was pretty rough.

the road is nice and hard, i dont think you'll get stuck. but there are huge pot holes. im not sure if there are off roaders back there rutting it out or something but i mean thigh deep pot holes.

last time i went they were full of water and the next day i was pulling mud out from INSIDE my gas cap cover. the surface is slick when wet but the roads are nice and hard. you'll just have to go really slow and avoid the deepest holes.

Haven't been in a couple of months so I may not be of help. You can call the ranger station and ask, though. When I went the sand was hard but like said above the potholes were terrible. Once you get up the hill it's pretty much a slow crawl and trying to hit the potholes that are only 1ft deep. Lol.

yeah the sand in the pass shouldnt be a problem. just walk it first. if it is loose, air down to 20 psi and put it in 4low just to be safe. you'll be fine.

I don't sand drive much. I have a 4x4 but its pretty stock standard. Any advice on self recovery if I do get stuck? This will be a solo trip for me.

Just checked it out this past weekend. Dry but very, very, very rough and slow. took over 20 minutes to make it to the water as I didn't really feel like breaking my truck. Huge potholes and massive ruts had me scared that I would high center in my lifted suburban. Something needs to be done to that road but I highly doubt anything will any time soon.

Fishing was slow, just 30 undersized trout to every keeper we managed.

I was more concerned about the sand in the pass, I have always been told the road was manageable once you got through, but this sounds like that is not the case.

Sounds like i may have a rough go with my truck if your lifted suburban barely made it through. I do not have a lift at all.

Thanks for the info!

If I'm not mistaken, the last time Towboat went up through the foredunes, he TURNED AROUND because of the holes in the road. If Collin won't go through it in Big Red, I'd never try it, even if you could make it all the way to the water. Shocked

Hopefully he will weigh in with his opinion before I head out Friday morning.

The wife and I drove down there Tuesday, I walked the entrance and it was way too iffy for me to try.

Didn't seem to have been any recent traffic. Honestly, the road does not even look like a road anymore. I agree that someone appears to have had a mudding competition

Sent you a PM the other day. Let us know how the trip went, and best of luck out there. That road isn't any joke if you make it in there, with that cable stretched so close to the two track road and all. I think every last one of us misses the way it used to be ten years back or so before it got like it is now. The Park had a beautiful plan for a kayak launch/parking area on Nighthawk Bay that woulda been similar to Yarborough-but as we now know, Nueces County got that old GLO land and I've been told a bicycle sidewalk behind the dunes is the hot topic right now. Evil or Very Mad
