I've never fished the surf but have recently got the itch. I plan on giving it a shot this weekend, throwing Rat L Traps and Tops. I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on fishing bait. Can you free line croaker in the surf or will the little guy just keep getting pushed ashore from the current and waves? Anything helps. Thanks guys.

By all means, especially on ideal days, free lining live finger mullet will give you an edge! Although for many years now, I pretty much fish artificial most the time! Go have a good time, .......cC

Gonna be windy.
Wait until the wind is below 10 mph and be there at the crack of dawn with topwaters. You might catch fish, but you'll take a beating. If your first time is a bad experience, you may give up and never get to experience the glory of a red hot surf bite.

My son and I have been taking a beating the last few mornings but have caught a few. The ground swell slaps have beaten us to death so I had to take a break this morning. But we're going to really get beat up this evening if the winds cooperate enough to let us throw a He-dog. The surf tends to be bigger in the evening from the "4 o'clock" blow as we call it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Wish I'd have been able to hit it last weekend with the light winds. If I try it out, I'll be sure to let y'all know how things went.
