Christi, Texas-
Due to recent rains, four-wheel driving conditions on the Yarborough Pass road providing access to the bay side camping and public use area, have deteriorated. Vehicles are being incapacitated and resources adjacent to the road are being damaged.

In the interest of safety and resource preservation the National Park Service is closing Yarborough Pass temporarily until the road dries out. The road will be opened as soon as possible when conditions improve.

I asked about the road when I went through the gate yesterday, and the nice lady said that they didn't have "any immediate plans" to fix the road....

might be something for Friends of Padre to tackle....

We are working on funding, NEPA and engineering to rebuild the road and re-align the pass, to slow down how fast the sand fills it up. When the oil company built the road there was no plan for it to last. It has been around 50 years and the road base is nearly gone. Grading what is left of the top material doesn't fix the road base that has sunk into the mire during wet events. Every time it rains people get stuck, break vehicles and then provide us with vigorous input and suggestion for fixing the road. Getting to Rehab the paved roads in the park was an eight year process with road work finally starting this week. Wish I had better news.
