Wife and I went out on the 9am jetty boat, the place was already pretty crowded with folks stacking up in the surf zone. Jetty carts galore which made getting thru the mess kind of difficult. We picked a spot about halfway down to the end that had some minor bait activity. Water was sorta clear but nothing to write home about. Surf was almost calm with a small swell and light wind.
Put out one rod with cut mullet on the channel side and started tossing jigs on the surf side. Nothing but hardheads in the channel. Did manage a dozen Spanish and a couple of HUGE whiting on spec rigs and Clarke spoons.
Switched to bait on the surf side with cut whiting and started picking up MORE whiting.
The Spanish were small, barely reaching the limit so a lot of them went back. The only fish I saw others catch were hardheads and whiting.
The Spanish were deep, I did not see a single one busting the surface the entire time. The first one surprised me, I did not think the water was clear enough for them. No reds, drum or trout seen. We left on the 2pm jetty boat, which brought a bunch of overnight folks out. |
