Yaked out baits for sharkathon, but it was not a safe method. I would put hooked bait and weights in yak and just paddle out and drop. But twice I almost hooked my self. Anyone have some novel idea how I can yak them out in a safer manner? Saw where one guys put bait and weight in small cooler, then just opened cooler when at the spot to drop. Was thinking of perhaps rigging to anchor trolley or some other device to make it safer.

Just hook the spider weight to a cleat BEHIND you on the kayak and put the bait in a basket or something, and unhook and drop when you're ready. Try to drop the weight first and then hang onto the bait. Once everything looks in line and somewhat organized, let it drift down to the sea floor...don't just ball it up and dump it lol

If you've graduated to sand bags or rocks and low test mono, still make sure that it is in some kind of a basket BEHIND you.

12/0 J hooks and spider weights in your lap while you yak is a bad idea.

If it's rough, I zip tie the the hook to the back of the yak.

You could put a cork or a foam ball over the hook too.

Just make sure to wear a life jacket and how to bail away from the yak.

On my terminal tackle for shark fishing I put hard rubber corks over the hooks, as deep as I can. Pull them off when I drop the baits. It's the only way I've found where I don't freak out if I get tossed. Saved me PLENTY of times from nasty accidents.

^Ditto. The only time I really worry is bringing back big baits after swapping. Something about paddling back through the surf with a cownose rigged with 2 12/0 J's sitting behind me didn't feel like a great idea. If the surf is a little rough then I zip tie the hook to the pad eye in the tank well behind me.
