Just picked up an 8 wt combo to try out this weekend on PINS. Hoping to find some action in the the wash and first gut and that crab, shrimp and mullet patterns should have me covered. Is that crazy thinking?

Definitely doable and honestly more fun than any other type of fishing I have personally experienced.

Intermediate line helps control the line in the wash. I like the Rio Outbound Short for quick and easy loading of casts into the prevailing SE wind. A stripping basket helps control your line if you get frustrated with the crashing waves. I have found an olive and white deceiver to be pretty effective in the surf. I had Jacks, trout, ladyfish, spanish mackerel all hit it this past Thursday down at the 20MM on PINS.

Check the wind forecast for speed and direction. Some days are more "doable" than others.

Be sure to wash down your gear when you get home.

Also be careful with big jacks and cheap 8wt reels. Never thought I would see a reel bend until my buddy's reel frame torqued and seized on a 20lb jack that he had to handline in. Good times!

Thanks! Running with an orvis hydros reel...hoping that is enough muscle. Jacks on fly gear sounds like fun

I use a hydros for the surf and jetties and it works great. Not too expensive so you don't mind a little jetty rash, but tough and dependable.
