This is my time leaving a report so I hope I don't leave any details out or include too many.
I left Dallas in the middle of the night Friday and hit the beach just a little after 7:00 am. I was a little concerned as I started driving down the sand. There was light rain and lotts of standing water on the beach the first few miles and I wasn't sure if it was due to tides or earlier rain. I kept heading south and the driving was good, nice hard pack. I ended up stopping a couple of miles past Y Pass, the water looked good and there was a nice cut out in the dunes for me to set up camp.
As I set camp the skies cleared and I was ready to fish. My first 2 casts brought me 2 small Pompano. Neither was a keeper but I hoped the bigger ones were out there. No such luck though and for the next couple of hours all I landed were whiting and a small drum. Around 1:00 I decided to head south and check out the conditions. After the 20 the beach got a little softer and narrower. I made it to about the 30 and decided to head back and continue fish where I had set up camp. Had lines out for a few more hours but all I could bring in was some more whiting.
Sunday morning was perfect. Little to no wind, sun was out and the gulf was pretty calm. Once Again my first 2 casts I brought in 2 small Pompano but there were no keepers to be found. I noticed a lot of bait fish in the first cut and saw a lot of fish jumping so I rigged up a smaller rod with a silver spoon and started casting. After a couple of casts I got a whiting and kept at it and caught few skipjack (pretty sure that is what they were, I am no known for fish Identification skills), I also hooked a small trout that jumped after I hooked him but I wasn't able to land it.
Around noon the whiting disapeared and all I could get for the next 2 hours where hardheads. The weed also seem to started moving in. On Saturday I had no weed and early Sunday was the same way but later in the day i starting bringing some very large chunks of weed. The wind was also increasing and looked like some big clouds over the gulf so I packed up.
Not sure what came across the beach but just north of Corpus on I-37 I hit the mother of storms with 40-50 mph wind and hard rain. I didn't have the roof or top on my Jeep but I was able to find an overpass to hide under for about 45 minutes until it passed. Of course i was following the storm up 37 and ran in to it again but this time found a gas station for cover and waited it out.
Great trip and can't wait until I can get back which looks like will be mid October. |
