got the ok from the mrs to get me a HDX from Nick.
now what reel to put on it?

I have been using the Penn 525 mag, and the Squall Mag

the 525 holds up nice, USA made(at least was) but the mag adjustment sucks.... and the clicker is worthless.

the Squall SQ15 china, love the mag adjustments and clicker is strong and load. but the internals, not as reliable...

I have cast a buddies Avet a few years back, very nice reel with his set up. I looked at the Avet some time back, just didnt want to spend the money on one at the time. But, I think that will change with a new rod.

I mostly surf fish and hit up Y-Pass.

Any recommendations?

MXL Raptor is a great little reel for cast outs and has ~30lbs of drag, not quite enough line for yak drops but perfect for cast outs. It depends on how much drag u want and how much money you want to spend.

I think the MXL MC cast would be a good option. I don't think the raptor version is necessary personally. I have landed a 4ft black tip on a cast bait on the SX MC cast with no problem. I like the magnetic cast control, although i fish it at the lowest setting. Rarely have issues with backlash. I have had mine 4 years now and its a good little reel. I dont think you will be disappointed in it.

I also have an LX MC cast but for me its on the bulky side of castable. I can still get good distance but am usually heaving a larger bait and weight. I will also yak it out for a short short drop at times. But my SX is my all around go to reel.
