|
|
I am new to fishing artifical in saltwater and was wondering on the terminology.
I assume when you say "Top Dog" or similar names you are referring to the brand or particular lure? Is there a place to see which each lure looks like and maybe even how to fish them?
I would like to have this knowledge under my belt for future trips.
Thanks in advance. _________________ All we have is time and time is all we have to fear |

Top Dog, She Dog, Top Pup, etc are Mirrolures.
Don't buy the others, so don't know there make / models, though Skitterwalk does come up alot on the board. _________________ GOBZA!!!

Hey now, dont knock the spooks and spook jr.s!! They catch just as many or more fish than the topdogs do. Its all in how you work the lure. Some like the sound of the mirrolures and others like other types. They all work if you work them correctly and with confidence. _________________

Didn't knock them at all.
All I said was I wasn
t familiar with the names of other brands models, as I am pretty loyal to Mirrolure for topwaters / suspending hard plastics. No knocks.
They all are good, if you work them right. It's just a matter of what gives you confidence, as with confidence comes catching (hopefully). _________________ GOBZA!!!

topdogs, shedogs, and toppups are mirrolures brand of walk-the-dog topwater lures
Skitterwalk are Rapala's
Spooks, Super Spooks, and Spook Jrs are made by Heddon.
All of these lures are designed to walk the dog. IE, when twitched with the rod tip, they swing left then right then left then right...... each swing rattles ball bearings in the body. The normal operation of these lures is to keep the lure twitching all the way to the boat. Hence, with the continuous back and forth motion, it has become known as "walking the dog"
What people don't explain on forums very often is why to use one or the other....
Mirrolures are relatively the loudest of the group along with the Super Spook. These lures are best used in noisy environments like the surf (BigJohn), really windy days in the bay, or big deep waters.
Skitterwalks and spooks fall in the middle. I use them in the bay when there is some chop, its deep, or at night.
Baby Skitterwalks and Spook Jrs are the least noisy. I use them on calm days and the shallows. |

I'm a huge fan of mirrolures , BUT for learning the ropes I dont think you can get an easier to work and more user friendly topwater than the rapala skitterwalk , this is a great lure to start out with and to also catch some fish .Skitterwalk that looks like a speckled trout is a pretty deadly lure , I hear the one with pink is pretty damn good too . _________________ I,d rather DIE while i,m living than LIVE while i,m dead

| The Top Dog Jr. is a great all-around lure. Day in, day out, I'd use that one. It's just my opinion, but I think the easiest lure to work is the full sized Super Spook. Here's a real good tip for the spook. I always remove the middle hook and split ring. It seemed to always tangle in the leader, and I've noticed no less hook-up performance either. |

Also , go to your nearest academy to check out all the different lures , just make sure you write down the types so you have something to go off of , they have tons of tops there and you can check out just about every brand name , it is mind boggling . _________________ I,d rather DIE while i,m living than LIVE while i,m dead

Thanks for the info. I just noticed I have a Catch 2000 blue/chrome and some type of white/red head in my box, so I think I'll head down and pick me up a few more to add to those. _________________ All we have is time and time is all we have to fear |

The catch is a suspended/sinking type lure. Good on trout, though I have never caught a red on one. If I could only have two tops it would be the bone spook jr, and a red and white skitterwalk.
Bone Spook Jr
Red and White Skitterwalk
Of course the pink skitterwalk is a go to for some in Baffin Bay

| dogman caught lots of fish on Saturday using Papadog, I threw everything else and had only a few blow ups. That is why they make so many different shapes and colors I guess. Just got to give them what they want, that is why I support the local economy everytime I go down and visit Roys and also why Academy's stock is solid. |
