Hit the boat ramp with motor vessel 300 bucks yesterday, and on the way there a buddy saw me and I invited him along. He's a guide back in Baffin, and him and I really can't spend ANY time together or else we end up 9 hours later with no clue what happened or how we "got here."
Sure enough, there we were quite a few miles out! With ballyhoo and some quid only, it would be all lures....
What a day!
I see how Sessions ended up going from beach zodiac stuff to offshore stuff....it's not hard to do when the fish are so darn interactive!
After several knockdowns but no hookups, we freelined some ballyhoo and set up a few drifts....when my pal's phone rings for the 5,238 time with a customer/client about "Will I get vibrio and die a horrible slow death if I charter you and fish with you down there?" Just as it rings, his rod goes off...and we lock eyes, and I tell him "I've got this! Handle your call!" I jump to the port rail, grab his rod...and get THIS!
One of my homemade kingfish leaders right up the freaking FOOT!!!!
Old boy had JUST laid it on deck after the last fish, and hadn't had a chance to grab it yet, and it had been hiding behind some gear, but NOT NO' MORE!
Oh, the FUN. With his customer not getting off the phone, the battle ensues between myself, a Spinfisher 6500, and a pretty sizeable king.
After landing the fish, and after my poor pal spends 10 long grueling minutes with said customer asking about Vibrio again and again (poor guides really have their work cut out for them in the patience department I tell ya that!), the time came to remove this doggone thing! My pal took some of my Mexican longline rope and looped it around the hook, told me to hold the hook's eye end down low, and he would just yank!
And he was right! Out it came!
And well, after the boat broke down, then we got it running and came back in through a 18knot wind, here was our meager reward.
Kingfish balls it is! Ya'll have a great 4th weekend and no laying kingfish leaders on deck! And to my buddy..."Hey man, if I charter you will I get vibrio and die? Huh? Huh?" _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.
