My understanding is that the vibrio is naturally occurring in the sea, thought to be more prevalent in warmer months and can enter through any open wound. So if your kids have any cut, then being in the bay or gulf is not a good idea.

Hopefully this is allowed, but here is a site that has the test results for the Texas coast.

Just an FYI. Beach Watch looks at levels of Enterococcus bacteria, which is an indicator of "warm blooded stuff" pollution, such as from people, dogs, birds, etc. This is a good thing to look at for contact recreation, ie. swimming. However, this is not a good indicator of Vibrio levels, which is naturally there and not affected by this pollution. Vibrio is usually contracted either through an open cut or by eating raw seafood with it present. I personally would not limit access to the bays or gulf waters. What I would do is to make sure if there is indication of any type infection (redness or swelling) to IMMEDIATELY contact your physician and tell them you have been in contact with salt water and may be concerned with Vibrio. It is the ones who try to wait it out that end up badly.
