Good Friday morning salts! I have been reading your site for awhile now, and finally decided to register and join the fishing discussions because I have found so much helpful information from so many different people here! Y'all do an awesome job, and I appreciate all the different discussions! I have a brother who spent the week at surfside, and he has called me saying there are lots of dead fish washing up on the beach, particularly lots of gaftop, along with hardheaded and whiting. He asked if I had heard of any red tide in that area or something else that could be causing it. I told him his call was the first I had heard of anything like that, and there have been no reports of red tide anywhere that I was aware of. Then I said I'll make this question my first post on corpusfishing, and I bet you anything someone will have an answer for me. So there it is folks, what's causing the number of fish being washed up at surfside? Any response is greatly appreciated! Again, y'all are an awesome website, and I'm proud to be on the board for the first time! Thanks!

Any chance it's from silt flowing out the rivers? Similar to a barge coming down the ICW on a freeze?

From what I can remember on the topic of cold water upwelling last year. This sounds like that. With a really warm to a cool water temp swing. Maybe it shocked them enough to possibly beach. The inevitable happens then.

My Next memory from last year was always looking at the wind direction during the upwelling. It was literally blowing due north from the south during the period of the upwelling. I kinda remember when the wind became south east to north west that the upwelling subsided. This year the wind is from SE to NW from what I can see on the surface radar graphs.

This year we have had every river from Brownsville to Beaumont dumping copious amounts of fresh dirty river water into the Gulf. Just not an expert on the matter but I have not seen these two statements I just mentioned here or on another not so old post. Maybe this will get us some more ideas generated.
