|
|
Last time I went fishing with a buddy he handed me his reel at the end of the trip and asked if I could take a look at it for him. Being the super nice guy I am, I took a look. Reel cleaning is usually a simple task, but this went beyond simple. Since it is a worthy reel, a classic in its own right, I took on the challenge to restore it. I say restore because parts are not readily available and everything you see was in fact restored with only the SF bearing being replaced. He also had a time constraint and needed it for the JP Griffon. Alrighty Then.....
Here are some before and after pics of the project.
As it turned out the reel worked perfect for the tourney and the team finished in a respectable place, ahead of some good guides. What is my secret you ask? Applesause containers to keep all the subassemblies separated. _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

Good job!
I have a question. What is the last item in the pictures just above the finished reel? I could not find it in the parts jars. It looks like something in the middle jar of vertical 3 jars, but in the jar, I do not see the shiny piece on the end.
Being a bit OCD, it is driving me nuts that I cannot figure out what it is.
Please help me..... _________________

| Ratherbefishing, isn't that a picture of one side of the reel handle, without the knobs and bearings. Great job on the restoration. |

I got a half dozen chronarcs that I have successfully taken apart, cleaned and unsuccessfully put back together correctly. You'd think I'd get the hint and stop trying. good job dude! |

You got it.
No handle bearings in this model though, so polishing and a light grease really made it smooth. I like the knob to spin on the post when twirled. Speaking of bearings, I was surprised to find the worm gear is bearing supported in this model. This reel is built like a tank. In the interest of full disclosure, the left side plate (turnkey side as this is a right handed reel) shows its age and use with a fair amount of boat rash.
The secondary project here was experimenting with taking pictures and playing with lighting. I also combined two photos into one jpeg for posting the before/after. The wife says I need to get a light box for diffused even light for better photos. Once again, she is gettin' into my business. And once again, she is right.
Thanks all for the comments. _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

Gee! I never figured that was the knob for the reek handle. Thanks for the reply. _________________

Thanks.
Everything under the right side plate was amazingly in decent shape. This is what it looked like when I opened it up. Dirt buildup around the thumb clutch bar and some corrosion on the main gear, but overall good and servicable. The factory white fiber washer that goes into the main gear was clean and had good body to it with minor fraying on the edges. I just wiped the old grease off the drag washers and applied Shimano brand drag grease by rubbing the washer between my thumb and index finger.

Thanks. LOL, nice try. I've moved on to rebuilding a wheelbarrow now. Don't think I'm going to post any pics of it but want to keep a lot of patina. |
