A very wise oyster guy I think his name was something like Sammy Ray (He had one of them fancy post hole digger degrees) always said "if oysters aren't there naturally they can't live there artificially"

I'm familiar with the Mr. Ray of whom you speak. Smart fellow - sorely missed.
Numerous problems with trying to get oysters in CC Bay. No hard bottom for the spat to attach, salinity typically too high, too deep in most areas. Sammy was on to something, because you take a plankton sample, and the bay is not wanting for veligers !!!

There are oyster reefs in CC bay. Used to be more but they were dredged for road base. I fished several as a kid. The best one was right offshore of the Ocean Drive/Peonish (sp) intersection.
Same with Nueces bay.
If you put down hard structure, you would get oysters. I'm not sure depth has anything to do with it, Some of those reefs were 10'-15' down. |
