I noticed on a past thread a few of you collect older lures manufactured
in Texas, I do also, but I've found a HUMP lure manufactured in El Campo
I am unable to find on any of the Hump color charts and thought I ask and see if anyone on the board might know or have any info.
It is stamped M-1 but doesn't match up with any M-1 on the charts.

Thanks

from McKee....

Yes,I have the original factory color sheets for the Humps. Hump started as the CC Lure co. in 1956 but was bought by Mr. Earl Humphries in 1958 and moved to El Campo/Palacios. I have two complete Hump sets (114 lures/set) and LOTS of traders. Have Mike get in touch with me.
David

PM me speckled trout if you want his contact info...

Thanks Rodbreaker but that's one of the charts I've looked at and haven't been able to find it on that chart.

Check your PM Becky and thanks a lot, now I have a source of information on future questions.

There is a simple enough explanation why this color does not match the Hump Lure Color Chart. Earl Humpheries was a farmer and avid fisherman. He decided to get into the lure making business. I believe he bought out a lure company called, "Coastal Lure Co." that was also in El Campo, Tx and changed the name to Hump Lures. The Coastal Lure Co. made very similar lures with one exception. Most of theirs had what was called a "Magic Eye". These lures had a plastic eye glued to the round lead eyes underneath. The magic eye was found on the SM Series and A-Chubby Series. The earliest M Series Hump Lures , like yours pictures were a little thinner and almost all of the earliest painted eye ones the lead expanded and cracked the lure and painted eye. Also the early ones were made with the hook hanger hardware permanatly inside the lure. If you remove the hook hanger hardware screw the hook hanger will not come out. On all of the later(Most are like this) when you remove the hook hanger screw the hook hanger will fall out just like all Bingo Lures. Most Hump Lures are slightly thicker which prevented the lead inside from cracking the lure. I am guessing this was the original Hump M-1 color or special color. There were several 12 packs of this color lure that were "NIB" (New in the box) that showed up on ebay and at lure shows several years back and this is where most of this color Hump Lure has been found. Here is a picture of a paper insert in the lure box that says, "Coastal Lure Co." All of these that I have found mention the "Magic Eye." I'm pretty sure your lures paper insert will say "Hump Lure Co." From what I can gather there were originally colors coded 0 through 20. He then added the color codes 21X through 25X and then even later added a 28X. There was also a set of Hump Tigers(striped lures) that were also added. All along there were four different sizes and styles, SM(small), A Series(Chubby Lures) M (Mighty Minnow) and F Series, the same size and shape of the M series only difference there was a "Flash" inside. You have to continue catching the fishermen with new colors, even back then!Smile

Thank you gulftrout that is pretty much what Mr. McKee said, here is a
summation of the information he gave me.

"Mike-I have color charts for both CC Lure Co. and Hump and you are welcome to copy them. The one here with the red eye is one of the early Humps. Yes, sometimes the colors and numbers don't match. I have quite a few like that including quite a few that Mrs. Humphries gave me from his personal collection. I wrote an article for Tide Magazine (CCA) that sums up the history of the company. Hump also made freshwater baits including jigs but I don't think that lasted very long. The mainstay were the saltwater line which was comprised of 4 models: the "M", "FM","A" and "SM". Each model was made in 27 colors/patterns (beginning with 0 and ending with 2Cool. In other words M0,M1,M2,M3...M28. I would love to show you a complete set and will be glad to add to your collection. I have some other stuff you might be interested in as well". David

It helps knowing that sometimes they didn't match the color charts, even though I fished with these in the '60s I didn't know there were so many colors.
I'm not much into collecting the Houston manufactured lures.

Dr. McKee is loaded with knowledge on this subject. I went with my friend, Chris to Rockport one evening and listened to Dr. McKee give a class on old lure history in this area. It was very interesting and anyone interested in old lures might try to attend one. I started collecting old lures around 2000 after visiting and admiring the collections of Corpus resident, Emil and the late Ben Kocian at his house in Houston. Ben hosted the Houston lure show for years and the first one I attended was in 2001. Here is a picture of all the Hump Lure styles that were made, both the "Magic Eye"(top two on the left) and the later painted eyes. Here are a couple not cataloged but are seen occasionally, a Hump New M-8 and Hump Old M-9. Lastly A couple of the Hump #10 and the earliest #10(on top) that is slightly thinner with the lead starting to crack the plastic and paint on the eye. Smile

My dad had a bunch of these we would troll in the Trinity channel near the top of Livingston for white bass. These and Little Georges.

Are they still effective for bay fishing when compared to more modern lures? They don't look difficult to copy.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I found this hump lure in an old tackle box in an estate sale along with an identical one. Has anyone seen these with the screw in hook hanger hardware? If so any info on them or perhaps copy-cats? There is no indication of the normal hardware to be in place. Thanks.
