I'm sure many of you have seen that Sharkathon has expanded the fishing areas for the tournament due to elevated Red Tide levels on PINS.
From Sharkathon:
Red Tide has returned to the waters along Padre Island National Seashore in various places and in various levels. Due to the fact that there are varying amounts of aerosols from the red tide on the beach we are implementing a contingency plan.
It is too late to move the dates, too many people are already traveling, and too many resources have been implemented, so we have spent the day establishing our contingency.
Sharkathon is NOT being cancelled.
Sharkathon is amending the rules on boundaries of fishing during the tournament.
Current Sharkathon rules state that the boundaries are only south beach on the national seashore, we have gotten permission for north beach within the national seashore now too. In addition to north beach we have also extended the boundaries to the south Port Aransas jetty.
The new boundaries are from the sand south of Port Aransas south jetty to the sand north of the north port Mansfield jetty.
Two exceptions to these boundaries are as follows:
1) No fishing from within Mustang Island State Park, park boundaries are from the south fish pass jetty to the barricades north of the old Corpus Christi Pass.
2) Fishing is prohibited in Gulf waters east of the Malaquite Beach Visitor Center Pavilion between the southernmost and northern most picnic shelters.
All other rules apply, in particular that fishing can only be from the sand adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico, no jetties, no piers.
Base camp location will remain in the same place approximately 7-8 miles down on Padre Island National Seashore. Awards ceremony will remain in the same location at Padre Balli.
Now to me personally I think this is a smart move, why condense so many individuals into an already confined area to what sounds like only 30(maybe more maybe less)miles of fishable territory. I've been reading nothing but negative feedback about this change in the territory. People wanting Sharkathon to refund their money and cancel the tournament for the year...I think that's just plain dumb. I understand that your ability to fish PINS will be limited but hey if you have bait in the water you have just as much of a chance to win as the next guy (or gal). I was just curious what everyone here thought about the change In rules. Let's hear it! |

I think it's the wise thing to do! some of us have been talking about this move since the RT showed up and pushed the tourney a few weeks back....
I FULLY support the decision of the Sharkathon organizers and staff on this, and to those that want a refund, WHAT IS RULE NUMBER ONE? quit crying and go fish....
Sharkathon has done a herculean job with organizing and running this event, even in the face of adversity....please give them the kudos they DESERVE, and if you don't like it, don't let the door hit you on the way out! and don't come back next year, no worries, because it will sell out again in hours!
people crying need to grow up.....Sharkathon wasn't created to cater to them; it was created to 1) tag sharks 2) promote conservation and 3) support the educational programs at the Seashore....which it does a great job of those things.....props to Sharkathon....

I agree too. You can cry.about it all you want but its still happening. There's plenty of other fishable spots. Props to Sharkathon for organizing such a great event. I think rule # 1 should be : WHINERS, GO HOME! _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

1. If this was a contingency they should have just done this on the primary dates.
2. I understand this is a difficult situation for them but if they are going to arbitrarily change the rules like this they should allow refunds. I fully understand how people could be ticked off by getting the message "Hey guys we are changing the rules, but hey no refunds cause that's what the rules say".
Regardless, the red tide is bad right now and if any rangers actually drive down the beach today there's a good chance their permit may be pulled. |

1) if you go back and read the red tide updates, the entire length of the beach from port A to the Seashore was covered in red tide during the primary date.....it's a different story at this time....
2) this was a difficult decision that wasn't taken lightly by Sharkathon staff....ask yourself, what would you do? how many people actually want refunds? or is this just one or two vocal people amidst the other 547 people who are still ready to go? is this 10 people? or 100 that are asking for refunds? I think they've done a pretty good job organizing with what they've been handed, and if people don't like it, they're free to organize and run their own tournaments....good luck, and I'm sure that the people asking for a refund could easily run something of this magnitude, with this many variables, and 550 entrants, 100% perfectly with no glitches....
3) I'm in total agreement with you on that last statement.... _________________

| I'll bet Nueces county, CC and PA are gonna love this. Everything but SBH requires a beach sticker. |

Maybe this move will save PINS from taking such a beating this year-- with red tide on the beach, you can be assured they would have torn it to shreds searching not only for a place to fish, but a place to breath. Especially for those "veteran fishermen" who have never experienced the aerosols.....or fish spines. Heh. Or washing the undercarriage afterward. That said, I applaud the organizers for making what had to be a tough decision. I know it isn't easy to put on an event of this size-- it really is amazing that this thing gets held together at all, let alone in the middle of a red tide event. _________________ Fish ON! |

people are crying because they changed the area that can be fished?
BFD... I've seen this happen at a captains meeting the night before a fishing tournament. |
