BAD down south, better as you come north.
Stepped out a mile north of the sticks and was SLAPPED in the face with aerosols. As bad as I can remember. A 50 foot section of beach yielded hundreds+ of eels, dozens each of ladyfish, spot, mullet, and a whole slew of assorted things in the 10's to single counts. Spotted numerous monster reds (35"+) and some of the biggest stargazers I have ever seen. Snook and trout didn't escape the rojo slop.
It was like that every 2 miles up to Bob Hall. Lots, and lots, and lots of dead fish. With more coming in with the tide. Red patches of water offshore, and the surf churned up foamy red.
Extrapolate those counts out, and in the 8 miles section of beach we went to, it's hundreds of thousands of fish!!!!! |

| Thank you for braving the aerosols and posting an update on the conditions. It seems that it is getting worse rather than better. |

x2
What species of fish did you mention that would indicate this might be peaking? _________________

Our BWB crew headed out SBH this morning to cleanup the camps that were left abandoned in the aftermath of the storm and red tide. We had been advised that one of the camps had several needles around so only the core crew went out. Can't have volunteers playing with sharps.
Hard to say if it's still getting worse considering I'm not one of the sensitive ones but our cleanup crew was not dealing with it well at all this morning.
Not that we really *need* another depressing update but the amount of carrion is approaching staggering in my book. Whiting took the hardest hit as it looks like they just had a hatch around two months ago. Tons of juvenile whiting out there. As we all know by now its taking redfish, black drum, snook, smooth puffer, skipjack, and various baitfish.
I'm really hoping this bloom ceases soon.
I suppose the only good note is that we managed to clean up the remaining mass of the abandoned camps within the first 3 miles SBH. The one camp utilizing an old truck bed camper suffered a major loss, the wind toppled it and it now sits on its side. It's pretty well thrashed inside so I'm guessing that will be our next big project. Yay....
Also, proof of the riff raff that is continuing to impede the progress we're making.
The dumpster we dropped at the end of Access Rd 6 will be removed Monday. It's pretty damn full now so maybe it's presence is helping to reduce the amount of dumping on the sand. |
