We might need to head to the beach to cool off in this heat in town. The water temperature at Bob Hall Pier is under 76 degrees at 10:30 this morning

Does it affect the offshore bite as well?

Boy, that's amazing for late July on the coastal bend! Shocked

I remember many times surfing or just fishing down there that the water was so hot, it wasn't really all that much different than the air temperature at the times. Maybe this cold water upwelling is what was going on a lot back in 66-67...... Seems like the water was always brown or brown out to 1/4-1/2 mile, then a dingy green, and the fishing usually sucked too! Embarassed

Seemed to. As far as 10 miles out the water temp never went over 80 and the rigs didn't have any fish on them at all.

NaplesJohn posted this on Facebook. Three day animation depicting the nearshore waters cooling over the past few days.

That cool water didn't hurt the fishing at all this morning! Kings, cobia and Spanish were thick all morning.

There has to be a good, fishable comfort window between the cold and the hot. When the water is really warm the fishing can suck too, depending on species, as the fish are looking for something cooler.

Prof, you are making me hurt inside. I'll load the boat and be back down in the morning. Wink

I paddled back to shore with a hundred pounds of fish on the kayak. That was a first for me, but when a second cobia shows up in the mix I'm not going to tell him to get lost, I'll offer him a ride!

I got myself a steel stringer and wrapped it around my waist so the sharks couldn't steal it. Laughing

With fish in the insulated bag or inside the hull Sharks wouldn't know it was even there, unless they can sniff through plastic. If they learn that trick, I'll be in big trouble.
