When I was SBH yesterday I went to check my rod that was baited with a live croaker I caught and my line was stuck. I put my rod into the holder and waded out to the second bar and was able to grab my leader. Pulling on it I was tangled in another line. Actually it was 2 intertwined shark leaders. One had 27' of mono and another 3' of steel cable attached to the hook. Not having gear that can handle that type of terminal tackle it has become a decoration on my fence.

I always enjoy bringing in leaders because I'm cheap and reuse the hardware if possible. Can't beat free surf weights either! _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

| I've had the same thing happen to me! I've just never waded out to retrieve it cuz I've always managed to get it unstuck. I think I might try wading out to retrieve it for now on cuz I'm like hickroots07, I'm cheap and I like to reuse hardware whenever possible. Nice report though! |

| last night as we were fishing on a pier in another part of the state a friend caught a crab on her line. she was able to bring it up onto the pier. she got her line unhooked and we thought that there was seaweed tangled around the poor crab. it was a female crab so we knew to return her to the water. when we tried to remove the seaweed turns out it was a tangled mess of braided fishing line complete with a leader. no telling how long that crab had been caught up in it. my husband took a pair of clippers and started cutting it away and after some time we finally were able to free her. i then gathered all the line and put it in the white tubes for collection. i get so mad when i see all the line all over the pier. i usually pick them and dispose of them but just like the stuff you found there is tons out there we may never get. |

I'm not proud to admit it, but when I was young wade fisherman I used to wade into chest deep water with a Penn 9 on an ugly stick. One day, while fishing with a friend, I cast with the power and gusto usually reserved for competition casters. Unfortunately, my reel was dangerously low on line and I spooled it and the knot keeping it on my Penn 9 snapped and leader, bait, sinker and all line went hurling into the great unknown. I asked my friend to cast in the general direction and after some time, he did it, he snagged my line. I fed the line through my guides, tied it to the reel and started to re-spool my Penn right there and to my surprise... a drum! Learned to always make sure I was properly spooled that day.
Also Zia, even when you're not catching anything you catch something. I think I saw you and your wife a week before the surf started getting cruddy. |
