Hope everyone had a safe, fun 4th of July. Started the day with some family & friends around noon. Started off by cast netting Menhaden near the Island Mooring jetty area. They certainly aren't as thick as they have been but they are still there. Look for diving Pelicans and flicks on the surface to locate them. You will need a cast net with some real lead weights to be effective. Put about 4-5 dz live in the baitwell, and about 5-7 pounds in a brine to cut up for chum. Headed out of Port A Jettys around 1 headed to the North but the swells were every bit of the 4-6 with some 7's and 8's the forecast called for. I changed plans and knew no one wanted to make that run including me. So we slow boated (10-12 knots) out to the ships. Trolled around the first 4 ships with no bites . We turned a bit to the south and picked up some decent state snappers. The bite was finnickey. You had to fish them with 1-2oz egg weight tied on to a piece of 30-50lb flouro and hide the circle hook in the bait. It was a little difficult given the less than favorable conditions. Friend asked if we could try to catch something bigger so we set up for a drift. Started chumming and had an instant double kingfish hookup. Boated the fish then the bite died. Slid over about a mile started chumming heavy and saw some monster spade fish. Set up second drift and hooked another king. Pulled back up set up another drift and at the end of the drift pitch out a live menhaden on wire and he gets eaten. Called it a day, and went back for a early dinner before fireworks. Picked up the wife and kid for fireworks. Did anyone watching the fireworks think some weren't quite going up high enough before blowing up? It sure seems like some of those streamers were coming down near people. Maybe it was just my perspective. Let's hope for some better weather in July, I'm sure tired of the wind.

PS.. Prayers for the young man who dissapeared while swimming with his family while swimming near Horace Caldwell on Saturday. Remember the ocean is a powerful force, please respect her.
