ok we are planning on going pins next weekend and do some surf fishing only problem is I have never surf fished. What is a basic set up , i.e. leader , line, hook size the whole 9 yards? I am probably going to have to purchase some new rods and reels so any help on what to buy and not buy and use and how to rig everything up would be greatly appreciated. also what kind of bait do I use? I wouldn't mind hooking up to a shark. . . . .

Don't know if you're into baitcasters or spinners. Me personally, I can't cast a baitcaster worth a flip. And spinning reel I use as an 80 series on a 12 foot Rod. Fish finder leader that I make myself. You can find red fish leaders at Academy. Anywhere from a 6/0 to a seven or eight circle hook. Live mullet. If you're into whiting or other smaller stuff double drop leader 1/0 hook using shrimp and fishbites. I caught a 35 inch shark on the shrimp fish bite set up last weekend

want to use spinning reel and I am going to be kayaking my baits out and honestly I want to try for bigger fish...

I caught a five foot shark, 45 inch red, and a 60 pound cobia from the surf using that 80 series reel and red fish finder leader. Casting from the 1st bar and not yaking out my baits.

For fishing in the surf, I almost exclusively use circle hooks (for bait). If current isn't too bad, I like the red fish leaders(Carolina rig) with 40lbs flouracarbon from swivel to hook (16"-20").
If more current, I'll use a single or double drop leader held with a spider weight (I like the long legged ones from the local fishing shops).

If you have kids and want to just catch something or to catch bait, a tourist double drop, size 1 circle hooks and fishbites. If whiting around, they will throw themselves on the hooks.

You don't have to get out too deep to get into some nice fish. I can't say how many times I've gotten beat up at the 2nd sandbar and had my dad pulling in nice reds and trout out of the wade gut. Especially in the AM

agree w/ all above...
a bass/trout rig will do 75% of the time...
a heavy catfish set-up will catch most of the bigger stuff...
but the rub is that small % when the specialized surf gear is needed..
like all things... theres a learning curve...
I'm still maybe in the sophomore status... Laughing
