I thought the danger was in the Laguna and bays rather than in the Gulf.

Vibrio is in the bays. Flesh eating bacteria and Vibrio are two different things.

Vibrio just refers to the bacteria genus Vibrio. There are a huge number of species in this genus, all the way from bacteria that are completely harmles to the "flesh eating" bacteria and the bacteria that causes cholera. Just knowing something is "Vibrio" is a very vague piece of information.

I've read many articles on this and the problem seems to be more prevalent in brackish water, and effects one who has a compromised immune system, generally. However, when exposed to a saltwater environment it is wise to always treat any scrapes, cuts, or other open wounds with over-the-counter sources available to you, such as bleach, hydrogen peroxide, Hibicleans (Chlorhexidine Gluconate solution) antiseptic/antimicrobial skin cleaner, HEB's triple antibiotic plus, etc. to try to avoid the problem. I carry all of the above with me in my first aid kit while fishing, just in case.

Following these bacteria stories for years, is it predominantly warm stagnant waters that's a higher concern? _________________ Live to Fish... Fish to Live

I know a few cases last year have come from people walking around packery barefoot. So much oyster and other hazards out there to get you. _________________

Great discovery I guess reading old medical books pays off. Too bad our waters are getting scary to walk bare foot with an open wound. I guess just to be on the safe side I'll keep wearing my waders. Thanks for the info rodandroll. _________________ Hook'em and givem Dragggg !!!!!!!!!!!!! |
