I'm not down there of course, but an Alligator gar is an Aliigator gar. Up here, folks use the biggest dead gizzard shad they can get. You never here much about it, but there are some monsters in the Arkansas River! _________________ Dave

I'd try some mullet.
Hopefully PocoBueno will chime in, I've seen some of his reports on gar in the river. |

My friend Billy Starry catches them on cut mullet out behind his gun range.
Of course, bow and arrow works well! |

I use a 6/0-8/0 single live bait hook on 110# piano wire. My go to bait is cut pony size mullet. Horse mullet works great but the crabs seem to like it more also. Unless the nueces river is running I do not use a weight. The gar picks it up and runs anywhere he wants with it. Gar are very finicky fish. Sometimes the slightest tention and they'll drop the bite. Ive caught them with trout rods on the way in from the bay and bigger tackle all using this method. The 3'-4' gar are great eating if prepard right. Bleed them if possible, ice down good and trim the pinkish layer if its there. Fresh gar nuggets are the bomb.

You can buy Black Salties of the internet and they work great for Gar. Hardheads with the fins cut off.

Live mullet a foot or two under a float just big enough to keep it floating... With wire of course! _________________ "I never had an Easter, but I've always had a bunch of speakers" - Beardo |
