Howdy everyone,

just getting back from another beach beat down and painful suffering extravaganza and really wanted yall's help identifying and/or doing something about the following fellow.

He's down around the 31 mile marker, and the mammal stranding network has been notified, thanks to ya for that Senior J, "Rebbeca of Sunnybrook." Your help is most appreciated, in the heat of the moment no one had any idea who to call.

After trying for a few hours to free this fellow, we finally got him, and saw him swim back down the deep deep first gut, only to beach himself deliberately all over again.

I'm really sorry about the bad photos, in the midst of things it just got to hectic, what with the storm and all down there right now. From what Jay has told me there aren't enough volunteers right now to go and help this critter tonight, so they hope to go in the morning. Let's all keep our hopes that this whale lives to see the daylight, because looking into that dark deep eye of his was unlike any experience I've had. Thanks guys.

Sorry for the late update, but Heidi and crew from the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding network are headed out this AM, let's hope this critter survived the night and something can possibly be done to release him back to the wild again. It's a long shot she said but there's always the chance. In either event, from the pictures I sent Heidi just identified this fellow as a Pygmy sperm whale.

Thank you for your efforts to help the poor whaler. I hope he makes it.
I wonder if that leaking chemical container had anything to do with the whale's problems. Wasn't the container at the 30?

you gave it a valiant effort brother.....we'll wait and see what the TMMSN can do....

by the way, if anyone cares, the number for strandings (which happen a lot during winter) is 1-800-9-MAMMAL, or 1-800-962-6625.....

Certainly agree with the ID provided, but don't have too much hope for its fate. A glance of the PINS camera this morning shows some pretty nasty conditions. Strong N winds and waves building out past the 4th bar!! Shocked Not a great day to be that far down the beach. Fingers crossed, but not banking on a positive outcome.

[Interesting red color on the tail fluke, as well as the head. The "pink" underbelly is supposedly common in this species, but it fades quickly after death. So .... maybe.......]

Hey bud,

Heidi over the Stranding office was indicating around 900 lbs is average. All I know is that all we could do is guide this guy a little bit, until he used his tail on me, which I probably deserved. I never knew he hit me, I just saw stars and felt the cold water come down my waders, I got knocked head over heels in one instant and was on my back in the surf. I'm just glad he didn't get my jaw, he probably woulda broke it, which I also deserved I suppose.

Oh-I left out, we tail roped him, and sure enough as soon as he felt the tail rope on him, he gave that line a jerk and that was the end of that... Shocked

"Fishinglady"---the container from the 35 has been removed. Our agencies got it gone pronto and deserve a pat on the back.

CS------"Interesting red color on the tail fluke, as well as the head. The "pink" underbelly is supposedly common in this species, but it fades quickly after death. So .... maybe......." Heidi mentioned this, and this specimen had a bright underbelly, and additionally, it's red fluid "Attack sack" was full, as I got a belly full of some kind of red whale ink.... Shocked

Good to see you too Doug, hope the fish fry was a good time. Found out last night he didn't make it, and the stranding team turned around, said the beach was too impassable. The coyotes did the rest over the night hours, and Cole Benesh sent his pic over late last night.

"I heard back from my corpus crew around 1pm. They gave it their best effort but had to turn back after they got a ways down on PINS because the beach was rough. They hated to have to turn back but it was all they could do. I don't think there is any way this one survived overnight in these temps anyhow. We'll continue to try to at least locate the animal got data collection and necropsy when possible.

Thanks again!

Might be just nature, but what a hard pill to swallow. Confused

Nice try TT, getting it out once was a very hard task. From what I have read it's near impossible to get them to stay out once they decide to ground themselves. Maybe they can figure out what made it ground himself.

Ok, I feel a little better. Last year when fishing around fish pass, I saw a very similar whale jump. Thinking at first it was a dolphin, realized quickly that what I saw had the girth of a chevy suburban. I went home in hope to identify what I had seen, but Internet searches for whales of the Gulf of Mexico produced pic after pic of whale sharks.

The one I saw was brownish black with white patches, like a cow. It had a large head, like a sperm whale.

You never know what the ocean will show you, that's why I love surf fishing more than ever !
