I took the wife and kids out after dark tonight to look at the Christmas lights in the Padre Isles canals. Coming around one bend I noticed something that just didn't look right. I had already seen one kayaker, but he at least had a light on (RED!?!?!?) so I could steer clear. This next dude was in one of those wading tubes that you sit and your legs dangle under water so your waist is about at the water line. No lights. He was casting to a canal light from the deep side. He was INVISIBLE except for the fact that some Christmas lights accross the canal swung behind him and I could see the deeper shadow. New moon. Dark night. Dark clothing. INVISIBLE. I was less than 20' from running him over when I saw him.

I talked to him. Calmly. I told him I just saw him, that he was totally invisible, that he was lucky I happened to see him backlit, and he really needed a light. He never stopped casting to the light.

So does this guy have a death wish, is he sneaking around looking for stuff to steal, or just a flipping idiot???

All three are good possibilities but my money is on the latter.

Well he probably fishes there quite often and doesn't worry about the one or two boats that might run by. Most boats tend to stay out in the middle of the canals . It's possible he was on some fish and his spot was nice and quiet and he wanted to keep it that way. Maybe he wasn't in the mood for conversation.

I see boats and kayaks with NO lights fishing the canal lights fairly often. I think most of them just don't realize the danger they pose to themselves and other...or just don't care.

He fishes that set of lights ALL the time this time of year. He has almost won the Darwin award a couple of times.

As is eveidenced by a certain % of humanity, enough of them survive to pass the "Darwin award" gene on, as Drake so sucinctly implied......

All the proof anyone needs is to spend at least 20 minutes at any launching ramp on a nice weekend. Combine the ubiquitous, copiuos amounts of booze that so many boaters refuse to leave the dock without, and it's a wonder that many of them make it back!!! Embarassed

I would agree with you Stan but this time of the year with all the decorations, people are cruising the canals pretty heavily. I am fairly certain I'm not the only person who cruised by him last night.

As for running the center of the canals, most people keep to the right of center to allow for turning around and passing. He was right about 1/3 of the way across the canal...right in the travel lane and a nice casting distance from the underwater lights.

The more I think about this, the more I think how lucky we both were. Killing someone by accident in front of my kids...even if his fault...not good!

Why would you assume he was a thief?

I made no such assumption. I merely threw it out as a possibility because A) there are a lot of thefts from boats and off docks in the canals, B) he had to hear me and made an effort to ignore me, and C) he seemed to be making a really good effort to be invisible. It would be the perfect theft cover...no officer, I'm fishing...yet he was TOTALLY invisible except for a trick of backlighting. I've heard of several episodes of theifs in kayaks exploring canals. This was just too good...it tickled my reptilian hindbrain in just that "Things aren't all right here" manner, but I have nothing more than what I've already stated to support it.

Yes there are lots of innocent explanations, never explain with malice that which can be attributed to stupidity, and innocence is more than likely the case here, but I refuse to not listen to my gut, and I felt it was plain strange.

Sounds like a death wish. We have several late night speeders that like to fly down the canal at night @ 30-40 mph with no lights on.
