This old rod use to be my favorite rod but i sadly neglected it, left it outside in the sun. i got bored and decided to bring it back to life. the cork handle was falling apart and the yellow blank was faded and pealing. I covered the handle with plasti dip and sprayed the blank with automotive white and clear coat. did the eyes with black thread and 5 min epoxy. i am happy with the outcome but was wondering if the rod blank would have retained its integrity or do they become brittle over time.

Glass (in this case fiberglass) is basically UV proof. Not so for the resins that bond the fibers together or any paint used as a finish. If the finish hasn't degraded to the point of getting fiberglass splinters or needles in your fingers, it's good to go with a light 600 grit wetsanding and spraying with lacquer. Colored lacquer blocks UV.

The original finish was just faded. Searched in internet and the consensus is that the material they use will last a very long time.
