well... Sharkathon this year was similar to the other 3 Ive fished. A lot of drinking, a lot of new friends and a lot of laughs... and of course some kind of freak weather. I do think every sharkathon I have fished has been tough conditions. That's not enough to scare me!!
I planned on going down the beach Wednesday night and work my way back to base camp in search of bait. Well... that didn't work. I didn't get packed up and heading to corpus until about 12 on Thursday. After all the routine stops and whatnot I ended up hitting the beach at around 3:30. I got in line and met some new faces to sharkathon who are now good friends and we will be meeting up in a couple weeks to do some fishing in port a. anyways. I got my number and headed off the beach to make some last minute phone calls and restock on ice. By this time its really late and choose to sleep in my truck at the Whataburger. wake up late and get my packet at least an hour after I should have.
I head down the beach with my dad meeting up with me later. I find a good spot somewhere around the 26 or 27 and set up the truck and get rods rigged up. by the time im rigged up my dad comes rolling in. we start fishing and pick up some whiting which we throw out on the red fish rods.
I rig up a small jack on my hx and run it out to the second gut and it holds so I rig up a jack head on my 50w. I paddle it out past the last set of breakers..... but, the last wave I hit knocked the bait off the yak. fortunately the leader is still hooked up vie the weight hooked in an eyelet. well.... maybe not fortunately. sometime after I hit the last wave and aproximatly 20 yards past I hear the leader get tight and drag along the kayak. then I hear a splash. I look back just in time to get a glimps of a shark tail that would fit perfectly to a 6.5" or 7' shark at minimum. the shark proceded to run for cuba with my kayak in tow. when I notice the back of my kayak start going under water I start to worry and quickly unhook the leader from the yak. in doing so my balance is off and I fall off. luckily I was able to get the leader unhooked first. I flip the yak over and get back on in a hurry.
Meanwhile, my dad (first time shark fishing) was on the beach holding the reel thinking that I hit a clear patch of water( couldn't see me over the waves) and was going pretty fast until...... he starts burning his thumbs trying to keep the reel from birdnesting.
I catch a wave from the third bar perfectly and am hauling butt back to the beach.
my dad sees me and start applying drag to the reel. once the rod loads up it pulls my dad down trying to hold on.
Im about 50 yard from shore when I see the line go slack. I run to the reel put it in high gear and try to reel as fast as I can. its gone. the knot broke.
I re rig and take another bait out but the wave timing changed and I was unable to get the bait out that far. no other action the rest of the weekend. plenty of rain and wind made things difficult. that last squall that hit Saturday did it for my dad and he wanted to pack it in, so we headed off the beach on high tide.
I learned a lesson this weekend. check your knots. im even thinking about taking some super glue to my knots from now on for extra measure. _________________ Chris Gonzales |
