Just bought a kayak and I am excited to go fishing. Any advice for a new kayaker? I would appreciate any that you would be willing to share. I have a whole bunch of places in mind to try and I hope they are productive.
Does anyone know if there are any kayak clubs in Corpus.
Thank you! |

Safety is always first.
If you fish at night make yourself more visible than legally required.
ALWAYS wear your PFD
Paddle into the wind and drift back with it.
If you have a smartphone go and download a radar app so you can watch the weather while on the water.
Fish shallow in the mornings. Look for backs out the water.
If drum fishing then the windier the better but anything 25+ may be a bit excessive.
Boats may not see you until the last second so keep out the way if possible. _________________

Congrats on the new kayak, my advice to share is keep a close eye on the wind forecast. I remember going out as a first time kayaker and getting caught by the winds and being out of shape and having a hard time paddling back to shore. I was a little discouraged after that but kept on practicing to where I feel confident in stronger winds now. Also try not to pack heavy, take only your necessities and even if you are in shallow water make sure and secure your equipment with leashes or floats for pliers, boga grips, etc..
Have fun out there and catch lots of fish and post some reports. Good luck!! |

Thank you AcousTennis and MECE. That is awesome advice and I will be careful to avoid boats and to not over do it. I didn't think about the wind affecting paddling. I usually fish on the back side of Mustang Island. Better get used to launching and fishing around Laguna Shores.
Definitely will write about my first trip. Just got to pick it up and get it to the bay. |
