Took my wife & daughter over to the North Jetty Friday. We rode the Wharfcat boat & were well prepared with live shrimp & croaker. We got a much later start because my wife slept in but we still made the trip. As a newly married man, I won't make that mistake twice. So what if she gets up every morning for work & is never late- if your wife doesn't hear her alarm for the fishing trip- don't complain- is the lesson I learned- especially when you get to the jetty & find out no one is catching squat. It was a pleasant trip on the jetty: the water was a nice blue color. Much unlike the water in Corpus. I caught 3 sheepies but none big enough to keep. But besides the shark fisherman, no one else had caught a keeper. The water was so pretty but NOTHING was biting. You know it's bad when you can keep on a dead shrimp for 30 minutes. I fished both the channel & surf side.
My wife & daughter walked back to the beach & were really excited to tell me that they swam with Sea Turtles. My 10 year old daughter was pumped up about that. We did see quite a few Sting Rays swimming on the top of the water. I know to shuffle our feet, but what if one approaches you while swimming. My wife didn't let our daughter know but one did swim by them while they were swimming. How do you defend yourself if a Ray swims up to you is a thought provoking question that does have importance to me now.
Lastly I have heard that the fishing has been hit & miss. Summer School is taking up a lot of my time but I really do hope to have a HiT day soon. Especially with my daughter. She knows dad can catch fish but I want her to see me catch the fish. [/list] |

| Seems like every time I've seen any rays near the surface, they were always cownose rays. Pretty non-aggressive. The reason most people get nailed by stingrays is because they step on top of them as they sit or glide along the bottom. They either whip their tail or arch their tail up to hit you with their barb. I've had rays approach me in shallow water where I could see them. I just tapped them with the tip of my rod before they got close enough to hurt me. They just scooted off in another direction. |
