My Daughter is going to attend A&M Galveston in the fall. We love fishing the coast, and I thought I would try to outfit her with some minimum gear that she can take. What kind of rod/reel and some very basic tackle so she can take advantage of free time by wetting a line? Space will be at a premium, and she'll only be using lures and maybe fish bites (she won't want to mess with live bait or cut bait). Also, I know this is not exactly in the Corpus neighborhood, but does anybody have suggestions on where to fish near that campus?

Appreciate any suggestions.

Well I am new to the South Texas area but I am only about a year and a half out of college, so the only advice I can think to give you is what I used while living in a dorm room and moving around the country a lot (Military).

I bought a backpack and some of those plastic lure sorting containers from Walmart to keep my gear in. That way I could keep all my stuff together in like a to-go bag setup and it freed up my hands when carrying stuff.

Since moving to Corpus I keep the lure container filled with triangle weights from 1 oz. to 4 oz. with about 3-5 of each. These are usually the first thing I lose when they get stuck on the jetty rocks so I keep a lot of them. I keep about a dozen single leaders and about as many 3/0 and 4/0 sized circle hooks as I can fit in the container.

I am not really an great with artificial bait, but I mostly stick with Gulp shrimp. works as good as dead shrimp for me most days (and stays on the hook better lol). Since winter hit I keep DOAs too ranging from light to dark in color just for some options. I keep a stringer to hold my fish so I can keep the bulky cooler in the car. A nice set of pliers with mono line cutters on them are a must. If she doesn't like touching fish then some gloves. I personally like mechanics gloves from auto zone, there a little thicker so I don't have to worry about a slimy Hard head spearing me. A knife for just basic utility and a head lamp flashlight for when I lose track of time and find myself fishing into the night. And just for the heck of it one of those 20 dollar bluetooth speakers so I can play some tunes without having my phone out possibly getting wet (guess this doesn't qualify as minimal but its nice to have when the fish aren't biting Very Happy ). That's everything that stays in the back pack.

As for rods/reel I sorta feel like it's personal preference and I have never been one for expensive setups. I got a quantum blue runner 7' and 8' pole both with penn pursuit 8000 reels. I find myself using the 7' more just because its more manageable and fits in my truck without having to take it apart. About a 100 bucks for each setup. Again I am not claiming to know whats the best combo, but this has worked for me.

I don't know what type of fishing she plans on doing (surf, pier, etc.) but I recently invested in a fold up extendable fishing net strapped to the side of the backpack. Can't tell you how many fish I have lost to them falling of the hook as I was reaching for them before I bought the net. They sell a nice H2O one at Academy for 20 bucks that can actually fit inside my backpack and extends to about 4 feet.

Like I said earlier I am only 24 and would not call myself a seasoned fishermen in the least. Most of what I just told you came from trial and error and a lot of nice people on a lot of different piers. Everything I just said fit easily into the trunk of a Ford mustang and has lasted me 2 years and 4 major moves. I hope this saves her some headache. Nothing worse than going to fish and realizing your missing some critical gear.

Not sure what your budget is but I'd look into Penn's fierce or battle combos for rods and reels. Both around $100.

My brother-in-law fishes Sea Wolf park sometimes. It is right down the road from the campus on Sea Wolf Blvd. I went out to the south jetty at the east end of the island several years ago and there is a huge hole in it maybe 25yards from where it starts. Some people were jumping on the green rocks to get to the other side and I saw two people slip and fall in the waist deep water. I guess it could be deeper or more shallow depending on tides.
I surf fished south of the jetty and caught some nice whiting a few times.
I went one time out on the Texas City Dike. That was before Ike destroyed the old pier on the end. It was a rough crowd out there. Fishing the dike was like fishing any jetty. Lots of rocks that eat your gear and slippery close to the water but it does not extend out into the gulf. Look at google maps, it is in the bay. I think it is there to allow for boat traffic in and out of the refinery.
I guess I fished there more than I thought because I have also fished the small breakers that come off the seawall. I was there in the fall and the skipjacks were all over the ends with a few trout mixed in.
I would think your daughter could find some other students to tag along with and fish. Does she have a CHL? If not she should probably stay close to campus.
