I've re-done some of my guides by hand before with simple, straight wraps. They've come out pretty good. My christmas present from the wife was the RW-3L rod wrapper by Pacific Bay, so I'm ready to bite off some more decorative wraps above the grips. I'm pretty sure I've got the right idea of how to do a diamond wrap but the part I'm struggling with most now is what color scheme to go with.
If anyone out there would like to share pictures of custom wraps you may have done yourself or had someone else do for you, please do.
If there is already a thread with a bunch of examples that someone can point me to, please do. I've searched the web to an extent but haven't found a lot in any one specific place.
Thanks,
Donald |

used to be a guy on here named artificialb8. He did a better job than most in picking his colors, IMO. Not sure if the links to the pics will still be good, but you might try searching for his posts on this forum if you want to see some nice stuff. |

I good set of colors to start with is Black, Silver Metallic, and one other color in metallic. Like red, blue, green, etc.
You can squeeze 2 more colors instead of the 1 extra if they are the same color in different shades. Like Black, Silver Metallic, Light Blue Metallic and Navy Blue Metallic.
Rods built with simple color combinations like this always come out nice and classy. Start out simple and then you can decide what you like and throw some extra accent colors in there. Too many crazy colors and they can get gaudy in my opinion. |

Thanks Killa - I've already got three shades of green coming that I'll work with on a couple of rods along with rose, salmon and fuscia metallic for another one. I had read the "different shades" suggestion on one instructional site and saw some examples that I liked. On a previous order of thread, I got some pearl white braid that I'm planning on 'dressing' these up with. It looks really good on the cardboard spool.....I hope I do it justice on the rods.
Thanks to you other guys for telling me about Artie. |

Keep it simple. Three colors, light, medium, and dark. I usually get my wife to confirm they work together....I've cut off more wrap than I care to admit. Metallic thread can be a pain to wrap and pack tight...especially if wrapped as single threads. Haven't had much time to build rods of late, but do have a Spey rod sitting on the shelf that needs to be done before Summer.
Thanks for the kudos....Bret |
