Today I was told from a reliable source that has no reason to lie about the subject something very interesting and confusing.
Again I did not witness first hand, but believe the story and want to hear everyone's input.
Some guys were fishing for over-size drum last night off cos-way pier, with a few nice drum landed things got slow and hardheads started biting. One of the guys fishing was using a 10000 ambassador big game and had fish bites as bait, he had a heavy weight when his rod tip started bouncing as if a small hard head or whiting took the bait and was trying to swim off when something crazy happened. After a few seconds of bouncing the heavy rod doubled over and the 10000 started screaming, the owner of the rod wrestled it from the pier rod holder, locked it down and the fish didn't slow at all. Now is where it gets weird, once the drag was applied a very large fish came out of the water tail walking, two differant times still while peeling of drag. I was told that the fish was to far to see what it was just that it was 4-5' out of the water and still had half his body in the water. There was no stopping the fish and the line of the 10000 unfourtantly snapped. Now I know it sounds far fetched, but some how I believe it's true.
What is everyone's input? Large lost tarpon in the humble? Freak of nature gator gar that likes salt water? Really fiesty black tip? Lol

Hmmmm...now this is a little intresting....now I am new here to corpus so I'm not sure how common this is in regards to what happen to me 2 days ago....i launched the kayak a little down from cosway.....and dropped in the middle of the channel.....i heard a huge blow and nearly tipped.....was a HUGE school of dolphins.....A few of them circling and swimming under me curious of me.....i admit I was a little nervous......and of course being new here I'm sure I'm not considered a reliable source. ..except for the fact that a game warden pulled next to me and looked very confused about the dolphins....like i said....I'm new to corpus fishing but.....tides are low.....i fished the last 2 years in Laguna and have never seen dolphins pass cosway and red dot like i saw the other day.....was a huge school of them.....maybe that could be the rod bender?

I had a buddy pull a all nighter by the pier from the kayak. He said he never saw anything like that, it was pretty quiet. He did confirm that the drum bite was decent for a while and then hardheads moved it. Saw a couple nice drum from the humble last night, they are starting to move along now.

We fished the bulk head around the back side of the base tuesday evening and my little brother had something hit is lure like a mack truck. We didnt see the fish but the whirl it left looked like a 300xs just blew out of the flats.

I'll confirm on the dolphins in the humble Channel RedSniper. I actually posted some time ago asking if it was normal to see dolphins in the humble, when I spotted some my self so yes they are definitely in the area. Could of been a dolphin that was curious and took the guys bait!!!

I Yak that area pretty often and have seen plenty of dolphin in that channel...they are pretty "friendly" too..nothing like a blowhole going 5 ft from you when you are drifting across those flats on a moonless night...almost scared me out of my yak! They cruise all over that area out through the boat hole in those deep channels. As far as the mystery..I am thinking Dolphin..may have gotten snagged..or maybe he decided he wanted to see what fishbites tasted like...they are usually too smart to get hooked...but maybe we got a "short bus" dolphin swimming around there...or maybe he was high on "puffers"! Laughing

If it was something big then it likely ate the whiting or hardhead on the line and got hooked. I ran into dolphins 3 nights ago in the nighthawk area. Last may one of them snuck up and grabbed a red on my stringer, went for a little backwards slay ride.

I vote for a "snagged" dolphin. Several years ago I was tying a balloon on to a line above a kingfish leader using a ribbon fish for bait. As I was tying the balloon on the line got jerked out of my hands and my reel started singing. I got my rod out of the holder and a large dolphin jumped near the boat. I thought it was just messing around with my kingfish on his first jump, but it jumped again and we could plainly see the bright red skirt I had on the kingfish leader stuck on its cheek. It then took off at a high rate of speed and I just hammered down on the drag and broke it off. Just one of the great thrills I have had fishing the Gulf of Mexico.

I have seen big alligator gar cruising along the norht side of NAS when we come in for landing on the Helos. I have also seen some 5-6' sharks. Both cruising between the breakwater bulkheads and the old runway. They are in there.

I also ran into a HUGE alligator gar while spearfishing on the North Pac Jetty.

Why wouldn't it be a Tarpon. Sounds like it to me. Me and Kieth Kay were fishing not far from there when a Tarpon missed my topwater. We both saw it our bottom jaws hit the deck, pretty amazing. I also have caught a few gar when growing up in the valley, never had one tail walk.

It doesn't sound like a gar to me either. I used to catch em all the time in the east fork trinity river an I've never had one tail walk on me. Based on the other comments I've read, it could be a dolphin or a tarpon.
