I took my neighbor and he is relatively new at fishing but he is dedicated. We fished through the rain showers and he caught this by South Pass lake. Rough measurement went 44". I thought it was a red but this is a drum right? Never even seen one this big. Is it common to catch them in bay this big and with a saltwater assassin at that.

I catch drum all the time on gulp, and occasionally on spoons, soft plastics. As far as catching one that big, I thought that was only common in the winter, but I guess anything is possible.

After about twenty minutes I ended up grabbing it by the tail. The head barely fit in the net. Ended up with three trout, two reds and this monster.

I catch them on gulps, but very infrequently. One time we did catch about 5 of them within a couple of hours last year. That was very rare.

It's a bit early for the Big Ugly Annual Run, but that is a drum.

Congrats to the newbie neighbor, and you for taking him.

Its pretty cool, as he is addicted and already bought a kayak..He is retired so he could not wait on my work schedule. Although people claim I don't work since I fish once a week. Sure is fun getting people to enjoy the opportunity to fish saltwater who have never done it. A big bonus when they have a day like this
