Cripes, this place has turned into a tough crowd...... 443 views and FINALLY a couple of folks respond to what I think to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen about fishing/gathering bait!!!!!
On the method, it would work just fine with only one person, it would just be a (very) little more work going back and forth driving the crabs. Larger diameter PVC would help some too, but why get greedy? _________________ Dave

Not to hijack my own thread, but this is sheepy fishing so it's in the ballpark: check out this video. If you read the commentary, the only dude wearing them out is using a 3/8 oz jig and shrimp. He looks to have a precut supply of small shrimp chunks in his bait bucket in the gunwale. He also has the barbs flattened so the fish unhook themselves, and caught a pomp too. Unreal!!!!

What I've done in the past is to put the bucket in the ground and throw a piece of mullet in the bottom of the bucket. Come back the next morning and viola, more fiddlers than you can use in a day. _________________

Where around Port A can you find the fiddlers? I don't think I have ever seen any. _________________ Salad, Salad, everywhere and not a bite to eat. |

I don't live down there, but they like relatively calm sand/mud shorelines with weedy banks. Think salt marshes and estuaries, as in lots of the inland shoreline in your area. They come out at low tide, but you never know. Even when none are out and about, look for holes in the sand about thumbnail size. Take a shovel and dig the hole up, going maybe 6" deep or so.
I did this a few years back on the bay side of the fish pass and had at least 50 in my bucket in 10-15 minutes, and the only sign of fiddlers anywhere were the holes in the sand. It was low tide too, and not a crab above ground anywhere! Had never tried it there before, but it seemed like a logical spot. _________________ Dave

Wow thats cool. I' ve seen them thick like that at night, but never far from holes. I wonder why there are so many in the open away from holes during the day. You'd think the birds would be having a feast. |
