generally the time to go tuna trips starts around october thru march. deepsea headquarters will be going out weekly and will start doing 24hr blackfin tuna trips soon.
take a jigging and popping rod along with some metal jigs and topwater/sub surface lures...more fun catching tuna on arties. good luck! |

It's been a while but I once went in October and we hit a peak yellowfin trip. The longer trips - two days - like the one I went on will get out to the Boomvang Spar area off the shelf. About half the boat was throwing plugs for blackfin and the rest were drifting live flying fish (netted at the side of the boat) or box sardines. I read that Texas is unique in that yellowfin come to the surface at night, which is when we primarily drift fished. I'm sure there are more experienced offshore guys on here with better info than me.

PS the kid in the picture was fishing next to me with his Dad and fought a big tuna for over an hour on 30-lb test. It was heartbreaking when the hook pulled. |

I went in November of 2010 and slayed the tuna. It was one of my most enjoyable trips ever. Caught multiple tuna and was the one guy to land a 124 pound silky shark. Won $100 for biggest fish and had money left over after they cleaned them for me.
