|
|
Thinking very hard about about repowering my pathfinder 17T currently have a good dependable 60HP Yami 2000 but want the fuel economy of the four stroke, couple of questions ,I regularly make the run to the Hole in the summer (17 gal tank burns 15-16) will the four stroke really burn that much less gas,can you use the same controls, and are the newer motors snappy as the old 2strokes .salesman says yes on the snappy part but I generally don't belive salesmen any help or exp valued _________________ EAT,SLEEP,BREATHE,FISHING

| I've had experience with the 2 stroke vmax and the modern 4 stroke. Your tunnel shot will reduce noticably, but the fuel economy is eye popping. Factor in the noise reduction and its really a no brainer. |

Your fuel economy will double. My buddy's 17' bay stealth skiff has a Yamaha 60 four stroke....the older one with carbs. We launch at marker 37 and burns less than 10 gallons to the hole and back...
Hole shot sux and the boat feels back heavy.
If you can afford it, do it. But you can buy a lot of fuel with the cost of a new motor.
I still have a ocean pro 225 that burns a ton of fuel compared to a four stroke. I just cant justify 16k on a new four stroke. |

Just for your info: Evinrude Etecs get 4 stroke mileage without the weight, are quiet, don't smoke, and still have that great 2 stroke blast off. I run an 18' long x 8' wide heavy Jon boat up with an Etec 115. The boat has a 14 gallon built in rank and gets 7 mpg!
This rig tops out at 47 mph too! _________________ Dave

Strap a piece of plywood down on that rig and you might just be able to fly!!! I'm betting those rides are not for the faint of heart. |

Etecs are great on paper and look pretty snazzy too BUT.... when they break.... bring your pocket book... and a jar of vaseline ( the big one!!!). I had one at my last place of employment. All computers and they are particular about the fuel and oil types too.
Just my 2 cents for what its worth. _________________

ONLY in fairly flat water and two hands on the wheel my friend!!!!!!
As to quality and repair costs: we drive Toyota and Nissan, the Japanese really build good products! I know of a major Marine dealer in Destin who sells a few quality boat brands (Pathfinder amongst them) but only one outboard brand: Yamaha. He told me that over the years they sold them all and the Yammies "just don't break down".
Costs? Every manufacturer has a stinker now and then and no major outboard parts or repair are cheap. I was only addressing the poster's two stated points; fuel economy and performance and my personal experience. _________________ Dave

Ditto on the E-tech. I have a 16 ft. skiff with a 60 E-tech. From bird island to 9 mi hole and back on 10.5 gal. _________________ "There's no such thing as a bad day fishing." |

I would give Dennis Stumfol at Bernie's in Victoria a call. He is very knowledgable when it comes to anything about boats. He is a Yamaha dealer. Been in business since the 50's. Honest. _________________ Life is Good |

4 stroke all the way! running a 2007 175 suzuki now, switched about 2 years ago and will probably never go back. extremely quiet (i used to have to turn around to make sure it was running or look at the tach), fuel milage is amazing, maintenance is a snap - actually easier than changing the oil in a car/truck. in my opinion, more reliable. will last a lot longer- the "top of the hill" for 2 strokes is at about 300-400hrs, while 4 strokes are 1000hrs+, thats what the boat mechanic told me.
only downside is your holeshot isnt as great, but most of the time you dont need to get on plane THAT fast anyway. always figured, im fishing.... im not in so big of a rush. just my opinion there.
im curious as to why more guides havent switched to 4 stroke already, id personally give up that little hole shot loss to have a motor that was more fuel efficient and lasted longer. but hey, im not a fishing guide either!!! _________________ "Deep inside, you know the fish isn't the only one that's hooked" |

I've got a 2 stroke Etech with 1240 hrs. Still runs real good, just ask those who own a 4 stroke.
I guess it all depends on how someone takes care of the motor rather than
what a outboard mechanic tells ya.

Most likely because the guides use their motors to put food on the table and pay the bills. All seems pretty academic to me!
The Etec that I'm speaking of is used on a sailing club chase/work bait and run by any number of absolute power boat retards. After 4 seasons and a conservative 400 hours AND being run for a while 6 months back with GASOLINE in the oil tank (I did say retards!!!!), it still runs as good as new and still gets the same mpg. That says a lot for a motor in my book! _________________ Dave

What brand is that Jon boat. I am considering getting rid of my heavy fiberglass boat for a big strong aluminum boat. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!
