Hey guys....
Hope everyone is enjoying the cold weather so far. I love this time of year.

I have a question....I have never fished PINS during the winter time, can you guys give me a glimpse of what it's like fishing during the cold winter? And is there any bait out there during this time?
I know it doesn't get that cold here but the 40's & 50's can bit a bit chilly.
Just planning my xmas vacation time...so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

Bull reds south on cut whiting. Whiting, pomps too and black drum. Warmer days smaller blacktips. Sand Bars if you fish for shark but c and r only. Used to be trout but I haven't done any good the last few winters. It all depends on days between fronts. The last few winters the cold fronts came too fast for the water to settle.

December 24th, 2012, I decided to forget all the usual plans and do my own thing. Got to state park, and only a few yards from the entrance due to not being equipped for the "big" trip down the beach. It was Just a "got to get away" trip from San Antonio and my family. Got there about 10:00 p.m., Christmas Eve, and around 11:30, a bull redfish hit and the fun was on!!! I pulled it in at 35" long, and had had the fun of life doing so. The fun part was that only God and I were there that night. No one else saw, and it didn't matter. Best trip of my life!!! Fished for another whole day and nothing!!! As I headed home, I envisioned redfish steaks in garlic and butter seasoned with lemon pepper on Christmas day evening. All the way home. ALL I COUJLD SAHY WAS "MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME!!!" No one can predict what the ocean will produce. GO FISHING AND EXPECT TO CATCH FISH!!!

Awful fishing. Only hardheads are caught Laughing Laughing Laughing. Just messing with you. If you can catch the calm spells with a little luck you can slay some fish. Pomps, reds, and drum. Sharks are another matter. Go deep. I hate the cold but its fun but at the same time its miserable with the cold weather. It's hit or miss. Missing sucks but when you hit it your hooked Twisted Evil . Nothing like filling a cooler full of pomps and reds so full you start letting them go. Yall can have the drum. They are just shark bait to me

Bring more firewood and warm clothes than you think. It's nice because ice lasts longer in the ice chest haha. I love long rod fishing for pomps in the cooler months.

Thanks for the advise guys......
For Pomps....would the same bait work? Fishbites and dead shrimp?
I don't plan to walk out in the water unless very very necessary so I can probably reach the 1st gut or so....hopefully they are there. It looks like this Saturday will be a great day to try it.

I love fishing PINS during the winter. Park your truck perpendicular to the wind and build a big fire. If you are going to camp above the high tide line, drink a lot of tequila. After many shots the water is fine. Put your shorts on to get your line out, then put your pants back on. Bring your bait, mullet if you target reds. It's hard to net in the winter. Do not drink and drive. You will be the only one out there and sure to get stopped by the park ranger so pick a good washed out place to camp. L

I'm heading down from Austin tonight. Don't know how I'll do tomorrow, but it will be nice and sunny, the beer will be cold and the rum will be warming.

I will be targeting pomps/reds/whiting (which means I'll limit out on hard heads...) and staying dry on the land. If anyone is heading out there tomorrow stop by and visit. I will be in the White GMC, anywhere from 15 - 25 miles down, maybe further depending on the water/fishing.

It may be a little too soon after the front to do any good, but this is the small window I've got, so I'm going to take it.

I'm interested also about the pomp, how for do you have to cast to get them. Are they in the guts or up on the bars? Do you rig up like your fishing for slots reds and whiting's.

I've always had good luck on a double drop leader using shrimp and fishbites. In the gut b/w 1st and 2nd bar. Same set up I use for whiting, and have caught slot reds on this as well.

I will usually use mullet or cut whiting for reds however.

Spending time down PINS in the winter is all about timing. Watch the weather! Typically 2 days after a front is the time to go. The winds will lay down and the seas will calm. Of course, the current weather shows this is not always the case. The water tends to clear much quicker in the fall and winter for some reason. If you can find clear water and the weather conditions allow for it you can catch trout TT!! Swim baits worked well last winter with a VERY slow retrieve up against the first bar. Fishbites and shrimp just on the other side of the first bar works for Pomps, reds and drum. Best part about winter is you get the beach to yourself on most days! Jeff Wolda
