Fished the eastside of the turnaround yesterday for about 2 hrs. Wind was nice, temperature was comfortable and the overall weather was beautiful and made for amazing pink skies at sunset. Sights like this make fishing that much more enjoyable.
Rolled up around 4:00pm and had no problem netting some mullet. Also had some leftover shrimp from a previous trip that I brought out the icebox. Fished live mullet, dead mullet, shrimp, croaker and perch. The only takers were the infamous hardheads. A gentleman who gave me the last of his live shrimp told me he had kayaked everywhere between here and Port A with no luck. His live shrimp boosted my hopes in landing some fish. Around 5:30 or so my rod doubles over and starts screaming as line rips away. I rush over to set the hook and it's fish on. My fishing trips the past two months have been pretty dismal so I was pretty excited when I felt a fish ripping off drag. Well my adrenaline spike lasted only a couple of seconds. The line goes slack and I pull in a leader that has failed miserably. The hook was ripped completely off the snap swivel.

I can only assume that it was a nice sized red on the other end of the line. The bite was dead afterwards. The trout starting popping not long after sunset but since the wife was blowing up the phone I headed home. I don't get to be out on the water as much as I'd like but even when I do it's always relaxing. Until next time. _________________ Fishing is my addiction |

| TFTR dude... I've been there a couple times but I never have much luck. Some friends of mine have hooked up on a lot of big uglies there (They usually go at night). Maybe that's was what you had on, or a bull red. |

If you're going to use store bought leaders, replace the snap with a split ring. Many times a red will open the snap and you end up losing it.
It shouldn't take too many times for the to happen before you either use a split ring or build your own where you put the hook right on the leader and crimp it on.
Live and learn from other's mistakes. _________________

Great story and pics, sorry for your loss!
I gave up on snaps or snap swivels, crimps and so forth decades ago for similar reasons, or store bought leaders for that matter. I've been "rolling my own" ( ) since then. Good knots and quality, well maintained line and leader have done me well over the years, as evidenced by my Wahoo post in late September!
Best of luck next time. At least you got to feel the pull and hear the drag scream!!!! _________________ Dave
