I got this in from Capt. Billy this morning. Thanks to all who helped out. It was great. Everyone pulled this one together

The short slide show attached includes some exceptional pictures of the debris entangled turtle found and rescued. Also shows how much work was involved in moving that bouy at the 17 mi. This bouy job was actually "above and beyond" what this cleanup is designed for. I became totally overwhelmed with people telling me that it was impossible to get the trailers through that soft sand area prior to the event and to tell you the truth it really had me depressed and beaten down. Then I realized and remembered something that is very important and that I had totally forgotten. Something I totally realized and accepted as fact 13 years ago before there was a single supporter of the idea of this cleanup but me. THIS ENTIRE EVENT IS IMPOSSIBLE AND IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN IMPOSSIBLE. 13 YEARS AGO WHEN I APPROACHED THE SUPERINTENDENT OF PINS AND REQUESTED PERMISSION TO ATTEMPT THE FIRST EVENT HE LOOKED ME DEAD IN THE EYE, GAVE ME PERMISSION, TOLD ME IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE AND THAT ALTHOUGH HE WISHED ME WELL IN THE VENTURE I NEEDED TO REALIZE IT STOOD NO CHANCE OF SUCCESS AND THAT I WAS OUT OF MY MIND. The mechanics of it are all really extremely simple. 1. realize it is impossible 2. don't waste time whining about something that you already know is impossible and 3. Suit up, show up, shut up and go do it. It was tough yesterday, but obviously not impossible. It was soft sand but if you have attended all 12 cleanup events you already know we have been through conditions every bit as bad or worse in earlier years and we will continue to carry out future events in similar conditions UNLESS WE ALL SIT AROUND TELLING EACH OTHER HOW IMPOSSIBLE IT IS. THAT WILL MARK THE END OF THIS EVENT. When there is no one left who BELIEVES in meeting it head on and getting it done regardless then this event will cease to exist.
All of you can be really proud of what you accomplished yesterday. After all; not everyone in the world can say they acomplished the impossible AGAIN yesterday. If there was one single representative of Surf Cats there I didn't see them.
Earliest stats from PINS for this event are 440 people picked up 95,560 lbs. of trash. 47.78 tons plus bouys, large ropes, etc. A min. of 55 tons. BUT Glenda, head of maintenance at the park, feels the actual amount is nearer to 100 tons. By far the most trash ever collected and the largest number of volunteers to ever participate in an event. The beach front was cleaned from the 15 to the 28 1/2 miles south of the end of the pavement. 13 1/2 miles. Another all time record. It was a grand event and this event is and never has been anything but you, the hardworking individual doing the impossible annually. What a Hoot. Billy

Great job guys! Wish I could have been there to help, but couldn't get out of work.

I live by the take out more than you bring in motto everytime, so I do my part on every trip.

If we can convince all visitors to PINS to abide by the same, we would have pristine clean beaches year round.

We were down for the Beach Clean Up and had a great time. We always l0ok forward to coming down and spending time on Big Shell no matter what we are doing. And we are looking forward to next year.

As a long-time member of SurfCats (but not always a proud member) I would just like for you to know that we were there. My buddy Dave had on his SurfCats t-shirt.

I have a question concerning the scheduling. Why was the BCU moved from the first weekend in March to the second?? We bring our kids and would prefer to not have to deal with the Spring Break hoodlums that we saw on the beach in Port A this weekend. Man, have things changed and not for the better.

Thanks, regarding the surfcats. Glad you two came and walked the walk. We have been disappointed in their participation in the cleanup considering their event is the biggest user of the resources on the beach every year.
The reason we moved it to the second week this time was to avoid conflict with many of our guide and fishing related friends who must attend the Holder Fishing Show in Houston the first weekend in March.

Just a word of thanks for the commitment everyone put into the beach clean up. I have not been on PINS since 1974 (just a kid) so I can't say I get much use out of it but I as a fisherman I am proud of the responsibility everyone takes to keep that natural resource clean and to make sure that it remains open for us all to use.

Thank you to all. God bless you for your time and resolve.

If one were to show up next year without the requisit 4x4, is there a way to get involved?

You didn't need a 4x4 we got rides for every single person who didn't have transportation down there. We had a nice couple from Canada staying in an RV at the park who rode up on bikes and got rides down to the area. They told me they had a great time and were sorry we couldn't do it again tomorrow.

wish I would have been able to get down there. I don't surf fish much but do appreciate everyone's efforts. Working the second job gets hectic sometimes.

Couldn't get there for the March clean up, but I will be in Port A and on the PINS 3rd week of April. I promise to bring out a load while I'm there. I can't tell all of you how much I appreciate your watch and care of the ocean and beach. You are truly blessing me and my family. It is truly a privilege to share your cities and gulf. May God Bless you all and watch over our troops.
