Texgator posted a really neat story about his quick trip to PINS and a young girl who was amazed at the sight of a real live caught shark and then actually reeling in the very first fish of her life. This awesome story brought to mind some past experiences with kids, especially while pier fishing. The memories are both good and not so good. First, there's the dad who becomes "Super Pier Man" when he arrives on the pier and he is so involved in getting his arsenal of fishing rods ready to fish, while his kid or kids are ignored and even admonished for daring to get too close to "his" tackle box, for asking too many questions, and simply annoying their father. I saw one father so annoyed by his son's questions that he angrily stood up snatched his son's rod from his hands and cast it without any bait on the hook and made his stand at the rail waiting for a "big fish." I watched the little boy standing there rigid, eyes focused on his line, cocked and ready to catch the "big fish" WITH NO BAIT! After about 10 minutes, while the father still rigged his rods, he never noticed that the little boy had reeled in the rod, and that I had snuck over and put a piece of shrimp on his hood and re-casted. Imagine the father's surprise when the little causht a small whiting! One little boy with a plastic "Spiderman" rod stood telling his dad, "I wanna fish!" "I wanna fish" So this annoyed father stood up and hurriedly cast the little boy's line only to leave the weight dangling about 10 feet above the water. Once again, another little boy is in the "ready to set the hook" mode, and his lien is not even in the water. Another eager and excited little girl sat in her little chair waiting for her dad to get around to putting a piece of shrimp on her hook. The dad rigged and baited his 4 rods, and then about 20 minutes later decides to bait her rod. She gets bite, "fish on" and he pushes her aside and tells her to watch his rods while he reels in the fish she caught. This went on about 4 hours. She causht the fish and her dad reeled them in. The little girl didn't know any different and just sat there smiling, happy to be out "fishing" with her dad. What is a kid to do? I have so many of these sad stories. It is the exception to see a "dad" spend a few hours focusing on his child and doing all he can to help them catch and land their own fish. Maybe, their first fish! He takes pictures of his child proudly holding up a monster 6-inch whatever kind of fish. It doesn't matter! What matters is that she and her dad went fishing "together."

When I take my kids, I set them up to catch my bait. I usually don't have to do much other than soak a perch or cutbait. The first right size fish goes back out on my line. Other than that they keep me too busy to fish much for my self.

On our last trip out to BHP, my boys really surprised the heck out of me. After a full spring and half summer of baiting casting and then removing hardheads with the occasional whiting and various other species, my boys asked me to catch a fish. "Really?" Haven't done that in awhile with them around. So I set up all the slide line gear, float and stuff for tarpon and kings. I turn around and the boys have baited castes and remove three perch from thier own hooks. "Wow". Was I impressed!! Now they want thier own rods and tackle boxes and are currently learning Uni knots.

I have seen things like that as well. It is sad to see parents that seem to be more concerned with their fishing experience when they have the opportunity right in front of them to create one that will last far longer and affect their childs life dramatically.

if it weren't for my kids, I don't think fishing would be anywhere near as fun as it is. I'd rather sit back and bait their hooks all day than catch a big fish myself... I've caught plenty of big ones, they haven't, and it's awesome seeing them hook into nice fish. Here's a few from the last couple months my kiddos have caught.

I'm sorry but I pity fathers who would ever take that away from a child your old lady maybe but kids no way. Usually I just take my three to packery park to catch perch and they have a blast.OFT that's the way its done! Very Happy let them learn, let them benefit from there own mistakes. That is how I was taught and that's how I learned what I know today. I'm damn proud of my OLD MAN and he's just the same for me. Might just be a coincidence , but when I go fishing without my kids I get skunked! When I bring them, we (mostly them), produce quality fish. I started them fishing early on in life, now they have there lines in the water before me. Some dads just want bring in a big fish to show the kids, forgetting that the kids need the catching experience also.

I had my 20 yr old son on the jetty at Sebastian Inlet in Florida at 6 weeks old!! Smile And we ain't looked back since, he's my fishing partner until the day I can't get out there anymore.. My next oldest is also is another fishing nut!! I also taught them a trick I learned a long time ago from another fishing buddy. He didn't have any kids, so what he would do was if there was a young child walking by and he hooked something, he would hand the kid his rod when a fish hit it after he set the hook. Then look at the parents and say," I don't have any children of my own but love to see the look on their face when they catch a fish!! I hope you don't mind." I never saw anyone refuse and the look on some of the kids faces are unforgettable. What is so nice is a lot of the parents didn't really fish but like the water.. And the kids have a memory of a life time...

I thought it was something special and a very good statement for our sport.

The days you never forget....fishing with the OLD MAN down town and I was catching perch on a swivel thought man dads not going to like this. Till years later I hear him telling someone how awesome it was. The day he says i'm going to catch a fish over there and casted over me and hooked up with a nice trout. The I said i'm going to catch one over There and casted over him and hooked up with a nice trout. My first over sized drum with him. Its memories like that that I will never forget. And I can't wait for my kids to get a few more years older so they can fill buckets of blue crab while dad is fishing, for them to say dad look what I got (fish bigger than dads) and I tell them that's the way its done. It took me years to out fish my OLD MAN and I love doing it when I can and he loves it. I can't wait for the day its done to me. Its awesome the pix and the stories of OUR kiddos landing some awesome fish. EPIC PIX AND STORIES TO ALL WHO POSTED! ! ! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I taught mine how to fish, and now when my oldest is home, he teaches me things he's learned. He can also see a hell of a lot better than I can so sometimes he gets to fix my tangles.

Hi Oil Field Trash II,

I'm researching boats that would be good in fresh and saltwater for fishing with my kids. I like the way your boat has high sides in the middle... Anything to keep my kiddos in the boat.

Can you tell me who manufactures the boat you have in the photos?

Thanks!
