The forecast was for heavy seas Saturday, so I launched the kayak from Port A and paddled through the jetties to avoid the crushing surf. It was crowded, but not a problem. The wind laid the whole morning and once past the first buoys the water was clear with weed scattered. I headed for the ships and found the waves very confused as they bounced off the sides, creating tough conditions for plastic boats so I worked back to the channel. I had one big hit, with a ling taking my bait to the surface and rolling around with it, creating quite a show. I must film too much, because I first reached to turn on the camera, then for the rod... he had already thrown the hooks and refused to come back on camera. I got in a great 15 mile paddle and enjoyed the flying fish scattering ahead of the yak - reminded me of fishing trips I used to take on the big boat.
I should have checked beach conditions first... surf was not as large as predicted, and I could have gone right to the rigs. Next time I'll know.

| Thanks. I paddle as much offshore as I can. Last summer I did 235 miles in the gulf, and I hope to beat that mark this year. |

Lots of people on big fast boats that may not be paying attention to where they are going. All the way to the SHIPS!!! My hat's off to you. |

If you paddle the jetties you had better keep your head on a swivel! I constantly watch for traffic, including the ships coming and going. Last summer a huge foul-hooked king pulled me right in front of an oncoming barge and there was no way for him to stop... Not that he even saw me. It was some furious back pedaling to get out of the way. I still got my fish but he nearly got me! |

I hope you smash that number. I can't wait until I get my shoulder fixed so I can get back BTB. only ever did it on PINS an never to the rigs, but it is serious fun BTB down island. _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

Take recovery slow and follow those Drs orders! Get it right and you can have lots of paddling years to enjoy. Rush it and it can haunt you... Been there done that!
I hope to improve my mileage numbers this year but I'm fighting tome tendinitis issues of my own. So far Advil is helping to minimize the issue, but I may have to slow down a little, and that's not my norm. All I can do is keep on the anti-inflammatories and rest between trips. |
