I'm planning three days of flyfishing out of Port Isabel in mid-April. First day guided, then two days on my own. Looking for recommended spots to drive up, SAFELY park, and wade or paddle my canoe with at least a chance of snagging a fish or two. A couple of thoughts are:
1) West side of Padre Island, just north of "civilization" (SPI).
2) Atascosa Wildlife Refuge area.

Any comments or suggestions?

My first saltwater trip of 2007. Normally would have already been 2 or three times by April, but too much work as well.

Booked with Eric Glass. Credentials look good, seems like a nice guy. Also, like me, graduated from SW Texas St. Univ. in the late '80's.

Thursday: Eric Glass is a top-notch, class act (in my opinion). Perfect conditions- sunny with light breeze. Saw easily 100+ reds. Had shots at 50-60 of those. Landed 13 or 14 total. Need to work on my back cast into the wind...

Friday: SE wind sustained at 35 mph. Mad

Saturday: NW wind sustained at 35 mph. Evil or Very Mad Gave up, came home one day early...

We spent the first few hours in some west shoreline coves, very near that Buena Vista ranch house. But, the tide was out and not moving. We saw a few lone cruisers in that area, but nothing like the fish we saw once we moved east to the white sands area, AND the tide began moving Very Happy . There, we concentrated on the transition area between grass and sand...
