I heard that the National Park Service began installing vertical landscape timbers Monday all along the road that goes from the entrance to the road to the Bird Island boat ramp and down to the boat ramp parking lot to prevent the parking on the shoulder that happened during the Memorial Day Weekend that resulted in the outrageous tow fees. Today I made a field trip out there to see.

So instead of finding a solution that would benefit the public, one could only conclude that the park is clearly giving the users “the finger” and is in no way trying to accommodate them. This was shot going toward the boat ramp from the turnoff on the road that leads to the windsurfing area.

Now looking back from the boat ramp parking lot.

I drove around to the end of the boat ramp parking lot and as I was passing by the cars, a ranger parked in front of the boat ramp looked at me and hopped into his truck. So I am thinking maybe he will hit me for not having a Bird Island Permit even though I did not park or stop. He followed me and then stopped to talk to the truck you see in the above photo. So I was thinking maybe I am in the clear but then I saw him in the rear view mirror behind me. He followed me all the way out of the park and to the boundary sign where the speed limit changes from 45 to 60. I was careful the whole way to keep two miles below the posted speed and he ended up just pulling over at that point and parked in that area by the sign.

I also managed to snap this photo (below) of the spot where the security cameras used to be before someone ran over them early last Saturday morning. On my way back I stopped at Jerry B’s Kayak shop to say hello and ran into a nice couple from Austin who travel down here frequently. They told Debi B. when they were unloading their kayaks recently at the windsurf area, the ranger told them the lot was full and that they would have to park at Malaquite. They asked if they could finish unloading the kayaks since they had two thirds of their stuff off and he said yes. Then the man parked his truck and had to walk four miles back from the visitor center parking lot. WELCOME TO YOUR NATIONAL PARK!

Thats a sad gut check for what they are doing there. To walk 4 miles after kayaking that flat bites the big one. Visitors that may not know what is really going on - sad very sad.
I was excited about fishing y-pass and such so I bought my annual pass when i exited because it wasn't open and now I don't care to go back. I don't want it to be my "unlucky" day.

Somebody accidentally ran over all those cameras nah..... Twisted Evil That is hilarious. I bet was a drug runner, but it'll be blamed on fishermen. By the way somebody lost a bunch of dope the other day.

All those posts all over the place are an ecological problem, disturbing a bunch of small spots like that is bad as far as opening up invasion spots for exotic plants. Those posts also serve as perches for avian predators of important endemic animals like the kangaroo rats. Somebody should ask for the NEPA documents for the installation of the posts......

I bet somebody runs over them too Very Happy

Great Landscaping accessories along the road to BI. The posts and their astethetic look again remind us of the class level of the park management. Sheesh, at least they could have set them straight. Sloppy job by sloppy management. The NPS should see this, they would be prowd.

You can if you have the BI permit and the parking lot is not full.

One can only conclude that Joe's superiors agree with him that the more citizens they keep out of the park, the nicer it is for them.

That's a nice shot of your tax dollars at work, Tyler.

Instead of using park funds to improve the facilities for the users, Joe is using those funds to restrict the pesky citizens. Makes you wonder how much additional parking could have been provided with the taxpayer funds (material, resources and manpower) being wasted on those barriers?

Hmmm.. How would you go about getting an accounting?

maybe some drunk (or non-drunk) with a big front bumper will accidentally stay to the far right on their way in and out of the launch road. this is getting way out of hand and i hope billy can push for changes while in DC. sad day when they are doing all they can to keep us out of OUR parks.

Check out my last posting in the other thread...it turns out one week after our incident the rangers called Sanford again and this time a lady with a 5 year old got nailed for $2800....this is AFTER the Caller Times article. They need to be fired and this last move is ridiculous. They are literally fencing us out of using the park for what it is intended to be used for.
