I have a Humminbird 385ci GPS/depthfinder combo mounted on my kayak that I use mostly for finding water depth and what type of bottom I have beneath me. I have had it for about three years and the GPS and water temp portion of the unit still work fine. I can't get any depth readings at all, though. The transducer is mounted inside the hull and shoots through the bottom. I have checked the connections on the entire setup and they are all clean and corrosion free(thanks to Corrosion X). I have good voltage from the battery to the unit and all of the self-tests pass. I am assuming I banged the kayak one day after fishing and damaged the crystal inside the transducer. I just wanted to see if anyone had ever had a similar problem and if a new transducer was indeed the solution before I spend part of my new kayak fund on a transducer. Thanks in advance!

Make sure there is a jell between the transducer and the bottom of the kayak. You won't get a good depth reading with a air gap between the transducer and kayak..
That kit looks almost exactly like what I installed. I reseated the transducer with no change in symptoms. My first thought was that this was the problem, though.
How hard is it to pull out the transducer and hand it in the water for a few seconds...just to verify the lack of an air pocket. _________________ Why is it that these days sales people seem to be as honest as I am knowledgeable?

How's it going brother....not to sound bad, but myself and several others that have done the kayak fathometer install have had repeated issues with our sounders going out for one reason or another. I JUST put a fathometer in my Zodiac, and it went out in a week (no water temp readout). Was the display, which Humminbird replaced for free, no shipping charged, and without a receipt. They have also replaced numerous displays from my yaks, and even two transducers that have gone out on me.
Long story short, if you give them a call at their customer service over in Eufala, AL they will possibly mail you a new unit, or service yours free of charge depending on age and whatnot.
Good luck man, hate it when they start acting up! _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.
Got a chance to try a few things with my depth finder. No clicking or depth reading in a five gallon bucket of water. Good call on getting in touch with Humminbird. I'll give that a shot tomorrow and let you all know how things go in case someone else has a similar issue.
