| it is with great sadness that i am having to report that don monday my neighbor and owner of humble baitshop was in a boating accident on lake houston with his 2 young sons. the steering cable on his boat broke and he was thrown into the water and drowned. his 2 young sons one about 9 and the other about 6 were left in the boat as it went spinning around on the lake. the older boy was able to flag a passing boater who happened to be a off duty fireman and he rescued them.his sons had their life jackets on thank god and they stayed calm. not sure why don didnt have his on it might be because he took it off while working on the cable. we brought him down to bob hall pier with us several times and he loved fishing. he was just laid off his job 2 weeks ago so now the family doesnt have a breadwinner as the mom does not work. he had 8 children 5 of who are still under 17. for any in houston area we will be having some fundraising events to help them through this later. channel 11 news in houston has a pic of him holding up a big speckled trout and that is how we would like to remember him. my husband has lost a good neighbor and a great fishing buddy. sorry to make this so long. |

| the boater who rescued the boys was a fireman and he told amos to turn the key off on the motor and that was how he was able to rescued the boys. they think don was struck by the boat or the propeller as he fell in. |

So sad, one thing I would encourage is all parents also enroll your kids in swimming lessons. As kids we learned how to swim and even use our clothes(jeans) as a float. Unless seriously injured I am confident in water and I think so many people who spend time on water are not prepared. Not to say that is the case here but please be safe and be prepared. Swimming lessons saves lives. Again what a sad story, is there a way to donate to family? _________________ Take a kid fishing, best investment for them and our future of fishing. |

Condolences and prayers to his wife and family.
I have had friends killed in boating and fishing accidents. Every time I hear a story like this it really brings up sad, personal memories for me.
If it will help in the fundraising efforts, I will donate a one day fishing charter to the cause. I can be contacted through my website www.DAVIDROWSEY.com
Sorry for y'alls loss. |

prayers sent out for the family.
this accident really hits home with me. I grew up in Kingwood many years ago. Was with my parents in the skeeter bass boat, on Lake Houston, when the steering cable came apart. Boat went into a hard turn throwing me over the stern. Dad was wearing the kill swith that day, thankfully, as I hit my head on the lower unit.
I tell my customers that if they notice me running the boat without the kill switch around my wrist, then their trip is FREE. Hasn't happened yet.
Capt. Forrest
P.S. although my house is in Rockport, it can be made available to go along with Capt. Rowsey's offer for a trip. Or, I don't mind trying to line up lodging donated to go with the trip. Let me know what I can do to help. |
