Found this guy on my beach walk this morning - Shocked

For scale, I wear size 13 flip-flops, so it was pushing 6 feet long!

You nailed the species. Hoese and Moore lists it as the Banded Shrimp Eel, Ophichthus sp., but the O. rex nominal name is probably correct.

As soon as I saw it, I knew what it was. Believe it or not, these are pretty common in CC Bay. In every major red tide outbreak, I see a couple washed up on the shore. Still impressive, given the size. And check out those teeth!!!! Surprised

nasty monster for sure. Apparently they have caught them in bottom-trawl fisheries in the gulf of mexico for years and were only officially described in 1980. George H. Burgess and colleagues published a report on them as a potentially marketable species. Apparently people tried eating them and they were actually good enough to consider harvesting. I don't know about you, but I'll pass! Shocked Mad

American Eels are also slimy, squirming, biting critters that are as unappetizing as just about anything out there, and yet as almost always with fish....... they're great on the table.

Then again, catfish, rays, sea robins and such also fit that same bill.

Very true - heck look at a monkfish! Even after you filet them, the meat looks like something you cough up when you have a cold. Delicious though.

Saw a bunch of those critters washed up on the bank behind the Reynolds Metals plant and on the Portland shoreline after the freezes in '83 and '89.
Also found some Moray Eels and a couple of octopus.

You are very smart for such a young age, my lad. I would like to take you in Nueces if you are brave enough, right after I take Bob Bobber. I am still waiting for it to get good enough for that task. Wink Smile

I don't know about being smart, but I love to read about fish and I love learning about this area. And on that note, I would love the opportunity to learn about fishing Nueces bay from a resident expert. I imagine it would be one of those trips where I just shut up and listen - take it all in. Wink

Sorry Luke, you teed that up so perfectly that to let it slide by without taking a stroke would be akin to walking by a cart that said "free money" and not reaching in for a few bucks........................... at least!!! Cool Wink
