I have never painted any lures before but am up to the challenge.
I bought some cripple heron lures plain jane and I'm gonna paint them myself. Looking for some insight on what kind of paint to use and would a hardener be needed.

Several years back I used to do a lot of airbrushing. The way I did it back then was to use any paint that could be thinned down enough to spray. Then you have to spray with a clear coat of something else. Experiment by spraying the paints you intend to use. After they are very dry, spray with some clear coat. You can buy that from a hardware store. If you paint the pigmented paint before it is fully dried, it will wrinkle up when you apply the clear coat.

I've done this before (even for adding an 'eye' to metal lures such as spoons, etc.) and used Finger Nail Polish... Cheap, Durable, Dries Fast, and you can keep several bottles in your tackle box.

I second on the use of fingernail polish. Most of my bottles are free from girlfriends that didnt like the color. you can also paint clear polish and then sprinkle glitter on the wet surface before it dries!

If you want to use nail polish try the Sally Hansen "Hard as Nails"
Pretty inexpensive and you can find it at heb.
That's what I use for teaser flies topcoat.

Thanks, i'll search for them. We bought some lead casting spoon bodies the took like manolures, and did them up with lure tape and nail polish, but if I could find some metal bodies that would be even better. Much shinier. As long as they are heavy.

The ones I found are 1 ounce. My go to Gotcha plug is white on white and I cant keep them, so I thought of painting some of these the same with the red/black eye and see what happens.

I use the wife's clear finger nail polish man on some of my top water lures to keep them from getting mangled up too much. But then again some of the best lures are the ones with all the paint knocked off. Or maybe a ripped up corky gets a new feel and works even better.

Been making my own top waters off and on for a couple yrs and I use nail polish thinned out with acetone in an airbrush and coat with a clear coat
